Try a virus scanner
Try downloading and installing Zonealarm
Try getting a licensed version of Ad-Aware (if you're running the shareware version right now, I don't think the shareware version allows updating)
Try doing Windows Update (to patch an security holes)
Try upgrading to IE6.0.2 (if you're running IE5 or earlier)

Last of all, and my most highly recommended solution.....go to Opera.com and download Opera 7.01 with Java and never worry about slow access times or pop ups again.  :D

It sounds like you’ve visited a site that has installed something like this. that will automatically generate shortcuts/links, etc… back to their page.  It's a 'trick' to increase repeat traffic.

ad-aware is free, not shareware, but there is a pro edtion, but the home edtion, the free one does allow updates

Thanks for the Adaware clarification, I guess the home version just has some features blocked out.  I suggest changing your browser to Opera 7.01 and experiencing the lovin' that is mouse gestures for opening, closing, browsing forward & back, etc etc.  Its awesome.  :D

As mentioned: a good virusscanner and windows updates will block a great deal of crap from the internet. However, they can;t block everything. For instance, if you ever come accross a screen like this:

DONT (!) click yes, unless you are absolutely sure what you're doing. In general, you rarely click yes, unless you are updating flash or microsoft products.
