If you will do a search in the forum for threads about the dreaded hint brushes you will find all you seek. Personally I don't think they work in sof2.

They have to, or RAVEN is worse than I thought, but anyway, I decompiled a few of thier maps and they use them...

But I don't see the need for them just because it's an outdoor map that includes a terrain... It gets cut up just like any other map, just use detail, and structural correctly, and you should be fine...

all of terrain should be (or has to be) detail, and any "trim" work should be detail

Also, I've heard putting caulk brushes inside of the hills/mountains helps too...

Yes tthe only time i would put them in a terrain map is where you have a hill range or mountain etc etc, All you are doing is helping the engine during compile to cut up the vis nodes etc etc.

If you have a terrain map for example that has no building at all there will be no structural brushes apart from your skybox, therefore the engine will only make its vis cuts along the main grid, ie the thicker lines in Radiant. So it would be possible that the game would draw absolutely everything (in the direction you are facing)

So for example again if there is a hill range cutting across the map that is obviously above eye level it would make sense to have a hint brush cutting through so that the engine makes a cut in the same place, effectinvely turning it into a wall. That alone wont do a great deal as you will be able to see both nodes/portals it creates (based on a single sided hint brush), so by using a double sided hint or caulk within the hill and hint in visable area you are making an additional portal between them and your line of sight will have to pass through it before seeing beyond it. In some cases it seems to make a bit of differnce, but what you really need to do after that is make some diaganol cuts with hints through the first one, right up to the skybox on all sides, then again will help cut it up and the engine will draw less.

I know this isnt the best decription in the world and some terminology is probaly wrong, but i know for sure that this method works and hints are definately a blessing with outdoor maps! especially sparse ones!! [smile] Works in my moon map anyway.

Trust me i have read and search the forum before i post anything.
To use hintes inside houses are no problem, it´s when it gets outside
it gets tuffer with all open areas..
I have ripped versions of mp_col2 , mp_jor1 and i have study, and i know how raven build
there with hints and clips like boxes and diagonals...
Guess i have to try to find a way to box in the map somehow.
Would be nice if there was a tut who said what every brushfuction was.
