Having played Doom, Doom2 and Heretic endlessly (Long Live Jdoom!) I want to mess about with an external Heretic Wad, preferably one that has a series of levels. For Doom2 the Raven levels were amazing. Any thoughts on some good Wads for Heretic anyone? What's the best?

My favourite add-on Heretic level to date has to be "Desert Crypt" (descrypt.zip) by Pablo Diccter. You should definitely check his levels out. His website seems to have all but disappeared now, so you'll have to manually sort through the archives at http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames (or one of it's mirrors) to find them. Ice's maps are really good too: http://www.raven-games.com/hosted/ice/
