Apparently, NVIDIA, Auran, Intel, and a few others are joining forces to produce a contest.

http://www.nextyearsgame.com

The object is for teams to sign up, and make some time of innovative, fun, pretty game using the Auran Jet engine.

I downloaded the Auran Jet demo last night and it seems pretty nice, still need to look more at the code examples.

Anyway, I thought some of you others might be interested in this. The top 3 prizes include a commercial license for the auran jet engine and apparently help to get your game published.

I just thought I would mention that "Engine" in the term that Auran uses it is pretty loose. They give you a UI and rendering engine, you have to develop everything else.

It's a little more involved than working on a mod, at least, from a coding standpoint.

Yeah, but july 27th 2003 isn't that far off.  It get anything worth wild done, you would need a team of atleast 10 people.  Including artists, mappers, modelers, coders, ...  And a lot of free time.  I myself know a bit of c++, but my math skills are lacking, especially in linear algebra(which is what ed engines use to calculate vectors) plus I'm still in school, working to my AS degree in comp. Sci. So my free time isn't enought, otherwise i'd join in a heart beat.  Maybe if they have the contest in another 2 years, i'll join.

Never heard of it until now.  My first impression of the web site is that it uses too many flashy terms and other buzz words.  I don't know, it just seems kinda fake / fluffy to me.  I guess my advice is, be cautious of an engine that has not shipped a real game (which it appears that they haven't).  Too often I have seen too many SDK stuff that "will just fit right into your game" that have been designed by people who have never made a game before...

They actually have produced two games, the source of which comes with the Non Commercial version of Jet that they send you when you enter the contest.

Also if you go to their Shop section of auran.com there are quite a few games (Admittedly "B" grade games) that were produced in some part with Jet.

I think the purpose is to get more exposure with their engine.

And, Like I said, I use the term "engine" loosely, it's not an engine in the same way that Quake 3 is a "Game Engine" it's more a set of classes and wrappers for opengl and directx that enable you to create a game engine easier.

Just thought some clarification should be in order.

For the console game that we are doing here, we are using the Alchemy "engine" which is basically a big rendering pipeline.  You have to create the rest of the game engine yourself, which is a lot of work (especially if you've never done that aspect of a game before, there is a lot of planning for things).

If such a project where to be started with people around here, then

1) It would be a great way to show that this community have talented people, and something to offer people that isn't already part of this community

2) I'm in - seeing as I'm a texture artist and I dont have to suffer as much as the coders :p

Alchemy, I've looked into that before, thats interesting.
Isn't more like an abstraction layer to allow you to use generic rendering calls so that you can multiplatform your game easily? That was my understanding last I looked at it.

Supposedly, (I Havent looked extensively through the headers and source for Jet yet) but its a little more than a rendering pipeline, but at the same time alot less than a game engine ;)

They presented at the 2002 GDC from what I heard.

Hey rick,

I went to Intrinsics website and filled out the form for the 30 day trial version of Alchemy, I'm downloading it now, I'm going to take a look at it.

Thanks for the reminder of its existence :)
