SOF2 is one of the best of FPS but in stability on the PC it's the worst of the lot. And it's #### irritating + frustrating. Like, what the #### I have been playing since the game was first released, then patched it to version 1.01 and 1.02. Apart from the occasional crashes I am still able to play the SP and MP mode. (MP is more stable)
But now both the SP and MP mode just suddenly locks up on me, I have tried reinstalling and patching the game. SP freezes on the blue screen, while MP loads forever in the black "loading" screen.
I don't know if my upgrading of CPU, Motherboard, RAM and sound card got to do with the game crashes. But I was able to play with no problem for about one week after the upgrading. The problem just came out of nowhere. After reinstalling I was able to play MP for about 10 minutes and the game just suddenly freezes, no way but to hard reset. Think it's the first time MP freeze like that on me. I noticed that PB was updated before the crash. Now can't play SP and MP at all.
My system: Pentium 4 2.4Hz, MSI 845PE mainboard, 256MB DDRAM, Sound Blaster Audigy sound card. Elsa GeForce2 32MB MX, Windows98 SE.
Pls supply 'useful' solutions... Pls don't ask me to update my drivers, I have the lastest(I suppose, for the mainboard, video & sound card) and all the while I was doing fine. Thanks for the time. |

well first, bsods, are mainly hardware related, badly writen software can cause them, but this game is not badly written or there would be alot more of them. try looking up the error codes on the bsods, but unlike nt the ones on 9x are not very specific delete ur sof2mp.cfg and sof2sp.cfg files this will reset all ur settings and alow the game to redetect everything, as it may still be assuming ur using ur old hardware. for mp, turn of pb and play on a non pb server, if this works then read/post in the forums at evenballence as its a pb incompatibility. also u will want to check the temperature of ur system, since its an intel cpu it should not be going over 60 degrees C either use Mother board monitor, or just check it in the bios after it locks up |

Thanks for the information. But what's a bsods? MY CPU temperature is usually 47 - 57 degrees C, I have 3 fans running and there is a fan on the CPU itself. What puzzle me is that I have no problem for 2 weeks after I upgraded. After I uninstall SOF2 I even erase related entries in the system registry to have a clean install. I wonder do every gamer who want to play SOF2 have to be a computer expert? Deleting the sof2mp.cfg and sof2sp.cfg files doesn't help, as the game locks up before it's even loaded. I have play on pb and non-pb severs and there's no problem before the locks up. I don't know about checking my GPU but thinks there's enough AGP memory(checked with some utility). I just don't know what to do now... And the Activision support system doesn't help anything at all. |

When changing motherboards you usually want to Re-install Windows. Not on top of itself but a complete reinstall. The main reason is that the registry will retain the settings for the old hardware. This can cause conflicts. I have had both sides of the fence. I have changed mobos and had no problems and then later on another machine I changed mobos and had problems. Granted I did delete EVERYTHING in the device manager so that no settings would be pointing to the old motherboard. It may be a pain in the ass but it may also be worth it to back everything up and reinstall Windows. I can't guarantee that it will fix the problem but it has a good chance. Take this from someone working with computers. Microsoft actually recommends that you reinstall windows every 6-12 months. Is it time to format? Hope it helps. PS. You might try installing XP to actually utilize the P4 architecture. Win98 doesn't use the architecture like XP will utilize it. |
