A hairline crack anywhere on the CD can cause it to shatter. You should see how much stress those CD's are put under when they are spinning that fast, any imperfection in the silver can cause it to shatter

I have had one disk shatter and one crack. The cracked one happened first, but by then I was tired of the game and didn't really care. A few months later, with a different disk, I was playing and just like the first post, BOOM. The disk shattered. It didn't break in as many pieces as his, but it did bound the CD-ROM around enough that was piece got stuck tying to come out the door. Needless to say that CD-ROM got replaced
