Greetings,
Gentlemen, I would appreciate any information regarding your decision to pull "surround gaming" support from Soldier of Fortune II. Since the primary motivation for purchasing the Matrox Parhelia-512 video adapter involved the surround mode, I am interested in knowing why this feature was removed. In fact, demonstrations of SoF2 in this mode were prominent at many public events, which further contributed to my purchase decision since I already owned SoF2 and enjoy it immensely.
I'm not looking to initiate a flame war, I'm just interested in knowing why the feature has been blocked, since your other Q3 based software currently supports surround gaming.
If you would prefer not to answer in this public forum, I would be open to taking the discussion off-line through private E-mail.
Thank you in advance, DeadAgain! |

Yeah, about as much sense as:
1). We don't support broadband cause that gives an advantage over those who have 56k.
2). We don't support graphics cards with more than 32 Megs RAM cause that would give someone an advantage.
3). We don't support computers that have more than 256 megs RAM cause that would give someone with more an advantage.
4). We don't support computers that run faster than 1 GHz cause that would give someone an advantage...
What a bunch of CRAP!

Hey all, I appreciate all the ideas and responses to this subject. As far as a personal message, I thought it would be good to post it in the forum so that others with the same concern might benefit from reading a potential explanation. But, perhaps I will send him a PM and report back (unless he prefers not to have it 'out' there). On the idea of having an unfair advantage, I can see both sides to this argument and they are good. However, I think the following should be taken very seriously: Software has always driven the hardware curve. Why would Raven remove a feature which rewards people who've gone out and legitimately aquired an enhanced gaming experience? If all software houses followed Raven's lead here, the entire purpose for "surround gaming" would be moot. It would also infuriate many people who have gone through the trouble (and expense) to aquire the necessary equipment. But since Raven's other titles (Jedi Knight II, Star Trek: Elite Force) continue to support surround mode, I suspect there is another reason behind the removal. But since I am interested in hearing the reason from the people responsible, I will refrain from speculation. And lastly, thanks to the Matrox Users forum, I have discovered it is possible to activate the feature; but it involves activating the sv_cheats cvar, which effectively prevents the feature from being used in Multiplayer servers which have the cvar set to 0. It also creates wierd "pop-up" and disappearance of some items also. Obviously, this isn't an officially supported mode. I'm hoping that Raven will reconsider/rectify their decision in the code. Thanks all ... and Hey Autopilot! Long time no see! Peace, DeadAgain! |
