I have a server that I connect to on my home LAN and people connect from the Internet. Currently I have one NIC in the server. My question is this: Will I get better perfomance with a second NIC for LAN traffic only while the first NIC only seves the internet?

I guess I can just try it but if someone has a similar setup then I could save my time if it not worth it. Thanks.

how is it currently set up??

it probally will not make much diference, if ur net connection is less than a meg, since it will use very little of ur bandwidth anyway, and ur lan wont be using the full bandwidth either,
but this all depends on ur set up

i did have 2nics but i got rid of one and got a router insted, gives the whole lan better access insted of using ICS which is dodgy at best

I have a router / switch also.

So its probably not worth it. Cool. The only thing that sucks is I get a ping of like 10 and people say "oh you have a LAN connection to the server and it gives you an unfair advantage..." Is this true? It seems like BS cause when I connect to someone elses server it has the same feel to it. I usually ping under 100 on the servers I go to. So I can not tell the difference.

Interesting question...as a matter of fact, I have a router and use two NIC's. I do it this way so I can use both of my IP's.

1) The modem is plugged into the uplink port of a switch.

2) A router is plugged into a switch port, and NIC #1 of my Linux box is plugged into the switch.

3) All of my clients are plugged into the router, and NIC #2 of my Linux box is also plugged into the router, though that is only to share files with my LAN and to connect local to game servers.

4) The router has one of my IP's, and the NIC #1 of my Linux box has the other (it gets its internet connection from that).

I used to play alot of q3 and in that game ping is very important.  But I moved and now my pings suck so i stared playing more sof it's a slower paced game so having a hundred ping isn't nearly the disadvantage that it is in q3.

It dusn't matter for your internet-connection, because a normal internet-connection will never get highter than 10mbit.

It is an other story for your LAN. In this case you can use 2 NIC's, but you need special software to bundle the NIC's. This is for next reason: If you bundle the NIC's, then you have a single IP-number for both NIC's. Then have you got a 200mbit connection (if you use 2 100mbit NIC's).

If you don't bundle the NIC's it will not work.

(You need to connect both NIC's to the same router/hub/switch)
