I've read that if there is nothing wrong with the way your card works out of the box (depends on the game, I'm sure), then it is not necessary to upgrade the drivers.  

As far as the settings go, I let the game determine the settings.  From there, I make small tweaks until I start seeing a drop in game performance.

You heard wrong. There's always improvements/fixes being made in driver releases. One of the more recent beta dets gave a significant boost in performance. If this doesn't interest you then by all means don't upgrade.
Also, you can keep the drivers that came with the card. No comparison with the detonator drivers.

Valid enough point but as stated most new drivers tend to fix issues & improve performance in some cases too. New features can also be added. As long as you stick with the latest WHQL drivers you shouldn't really be any worse off at the very least.

The "significant performance increase" in the 40.xx drivers was mostly in 3D Mark 2001, not games, well perhaps Aquanox, but nothing more really.

not so, they helped to quite a lot is SOF2.
