Games are better in the DVD boxes.  Retailers can fit more on their shelves, so we get more variety and they are less expensive to produce, so publishers can keep their costs lower.  Ideally, passing these lower costs all the way through the chain to us.

I prefer the DVD boxes, myself.
Put the manual in PDF or html format on the CD.

Dream on pal.
They switched to DVD boxes in germany (some exceptions...) some time ago, and guess what happened to game prices?
If anything, they went up!

I love my US Dragon Edition of Ultima Acension here in my shelf, THAT'S a f###ing big box, guys ;)
(OK, it was kinda expensive to import, but...)

NWN is 3 CDs and a very thick manual.  Also comes with a cloth map.

Yeah, I sure miss those DVD boxes...

the dvd may not be right for every game.  but its been years since ive even looked at the manual for a game.   with the exception of nwn, but ive looked at that manual like twice.

and a good way to fix the huge manual problem would be to access the manual via console, so you could find out things by entering something like

/man fps

and the console would tell you everything about frames per second and all of cvars that effect it.

also it would be nice to have the whole manual available ingame with wordsearch.

i personally would find that much more usefull than any current game manual.

DVD boxes are too limited.  I like extras.

Ehhhh.....almost all games were I live are sold in dvd cases!
Europe must be ahead of were you live m8.

If the manual and stuff is big its in the CD in pdf. No problems there.

Also if there are several CDs thats no prob. I have a dvd case game with 6 cds, no problem. THey all fit on top of eachother 3 on one side 3 on the other.

Exstras are mostly in collectors editions. Then you get the "old" box.
