You will not get a representative result before tomorrow same time ... Cause the yanks are all at work/school and cannot reply .. so only europeans who tend to have manual will reply :)

Plenty of Americans post during the day.  Being at work certainly doesn't stop me.

I like the manual transmission.  Makes me feel like I'm more in control of the car.  They have always been more fuel efficient than automatics but I don't think it's that significant of a difference on newer cars.

But, if you are going to be commuting through horrendous stop and go, bumper to bumper rush-hour traffic, then you will learn to appreciate an automatic transmission.

I like manual as Pork says "for control"... but with my CDs and other passengers, I would mess up so much, I am so use to Automatic... like in Crusin' USA, I always go for Automatic!

I am FAR too lazy to use anything other than Automatic...
But I do want to at least learn 'stick-shift'' (as some call Manual in the US).  I figure that's a good thing to know.

I voted for auto as it is my pref.
I would suggest you get a manual for your first car. then you'll be able to comfortably drive either/or in the future.

I'd say Manual - of course, I'm from Europe :) Seriously, it gives you a lot more control over your car and in my honest opinion it is a better feeling, because you know that YOU are shifting the gear - not a piece of electronic. Manual transmission also allows you to adapt your speed easier to the current situation: e.g. you're driving through a living street. auto would shift and shift gear up if you didn't get your foot off the acceleration pad... with manual transmission you'd stay in the first gear and your worries about going beyond the really low 5 km/h limit would be less ;) at least a bit.
of course that also depends on your experience...

just my 0.02€ ;-)

Good point.  We just sold a real nice 91 Acura Integra with only 67k on the odometer.  It took us a while as several folks who came to look at it couldn't drive a stick.

Finally we found a kid going off to college who was willing to learn.  He saw the car was real nice and bought it.  Took him a while to back out of our drive way though.  Kept stalling :)

My dad's old car is a manual.  He still keeps it around in hopes I'll learn manual one of these years.  I figure I'll at least try...it's a spare car so if I run it into a tree it's no big deal.

One question...if I use my left foot for the clutch, right for gas/break, which one do I use to change the radio station?
