Ok, for my map I want to put in a ceiling that has the basic design of the top half of two cylinders intersecting, but without any of the center stuff. THe type of ceiling section you might see in a cathedral or something like that. Unfortunately I can't get figure out how to get it to work without a whole bunch of patch meshes (tried endcaps but can't manipulate them well enough to follow the curve of the brush 90 degrees to them). Does anyone know of an easier way.

You mean like the barrel roofs of two hallways intersecting at a 90 degree angle?

I can't help you if I don't understand exactly what you want.

It sounds like he's describing a vaulted ceiling, where the vaults come down to pillars at their lowest points.  Here's a shot of one I did for SoF2:

<< It won't let me show the image.  It doesn't like the URL.  I'll post it from a different URL tonight.>>

This ain't too tough, but you're right, it takes a lot of patch meshes.  Each vault takes 8, plus 2 between each side of the vaults.  Use cap texturing for the vaults, otherwise your texture will distort.
