I bring this to the news because it effects us all... in a wonderful way. HardOCP just wrote a preview about a new APEX gaming console that is more of an entertainment center than anything else. When reading the stats for this box, I can't help but think of a modded XBox.

• instant o­n WinXP that isn't locked down (you can change it)
• High Definition outputs
  
• usb, ethernet, modem
  
• DVD/CD, 40Gb drive (standard format)
  
• plays PC games

It's basically a computer for under your TV o­nly it's not going to break your wallet. Although pricing hasn't been announce (product announcement by APEX this Thursday), it's expected to run about $3-400 US.

I agree that it's a funny concept to purchase a gaming console from such a company.... but the idea of what they are offering is quite awesome.

It's like being given an XBox (well, an XBox with cheaper components) and told that we can go ahead and use it like a PC. That includes being able to upgrade the components (somewhat) and play around with the OS.

Perhaps the only things missing are built in wireless networking and an audio/video input for recording from the TV.

Flip side.... I hear the next XBox will come with the same options, minus the ability to upgrade and fool with the OS. So, if your looking for an entertainment console, you either go with reliablility, or configurability (XBox or APEX).

Just an update from the UK news on this subject.

Apex's entry-level machine is expected to cost $399, (£231), far more than its console rivals.

But there is more.

A company technician admitted that even some current games, such as Call of Duty, would be "a bit choppy" on the ApeXtreme.
