I have been looking at the textures in the game. Almost every texture has an @ sign in the name. Some have the white box around it and that's not very many. So if the faq is correct we are very very limited on the blending of terrain.
This is just an observation from my end.

Has anyone tried blending terrain yet?

I just played around with it. I found that if I use a texture with a white box around it (set to define that the texture is really an alpha texture) I find that I will fall through my terrain. However this does not happen with any other texture including those with the @ sign. However, my terrain will only look blended when I use a texture with the white box and not if I use another one.

Where is the working combination that I seek?

I really don't know. It's a total crap shoot. No offense shoot. lol

Something else I had hit me like a lightning bolt. I think I know the reason the game map makers used a bat file to compile. Cause they had problems compiling those maps inside the editor. Of course it may be just my machine but every time I try to compile any map file I make with terrain added to it the editor gets a buffer underrun error and just closes. Sometimes the editor closes with no error. I use the codbuilder to compile which is outside the editor then play test and everything is alright. At least I thinks it's alright. lol
I guess a person can make his simple terrain mesh and texture it then go in and see if he falls through it. If he don't go on to the blending part. It is really an awesome feature of the SDK. You could build a whole mountain chain with it.

Your editor is not the only one that closes by itself... so does mine. It was closing at the end of the compile every time I compiled my terrain test.

I solved the problem I think and will update the tutorial based on this....

you need 2 types of terrain textures to blend: a solid texture and an alpha texture. The solid textures have an @ sign in the name and the alpha (or transparent) textures have the name_name naming convention along with a white outline around the texture.

I started with a very simple square and turned it into a terrain patch mesh. I textured it with the solid texture and copied it.

The copy I moved so I could work on it without disrupting the other and texture that one with the alpha texture. This alpha texture is the one that I painted with the alpha brush so it would blend. basically I just made a transparent line down the center of the brush.

I moved this texture back to where it came from so it would occupy the exact same space as the other terrain mesh.

Now what will happen is the solid texture will remain solid so that I can walk on it. The transparent texture will act as a decal. Everything painted with the alpha will be completely transparent while the rest will appear completely opaque (solid in color).

I built a box around my map and compiled it for testing with success.

Good Job.
These are the amounts of alpha textures I found with a white trim around them in the editor. Not very many.

1---Austria Ground
3---Belgium Ground
1---Global
2---Industrial
8---Normandy Ground
1---Russian Ground

There are quite a few in the SFX textures but quite useless for terrain. So I will try what you have found out by testing usng textures from the Normandy area.

OK... I have rewritten the terrain-blending tutorial... entirely.

It works like a champ for me but it's up to you to find what's wrong with it [devilishgrin]

Check it out. It's much more complete then the previous one.

My editor still closes after the compile. After blending did you drag the height of the blended terrain then compile? Or did you just blend the terrain then compile?
