i think i fixed the "tris with 2 + major etc. " problem from my earlier post. I selected all the vertices and snapped them to the grid. Now it still says "tris with 2 + major etc. " in the compiler but it compiles and runs!

You can build with flat brushes if there are going to be no real terrain like hills etc. One good thing about the terrain mesh is that you can I believe add a little patch on top of the regular flat brush for effect like a debris pile. Or you could have a regular brush then a fence and have terrain on the other side of the fence. Say you could have a street, sidewalk, etc. then have a yard with terrain in it. Lots of possibilites with both brush and terrain meshes.

I have found that if you need to have lots of terrain patches the vertice points have to be stitched welded together. So if your level is entirely terrain mesh you would need to make all the patches line up. If you don't and start manipulating the terrain you will see tears in the terrain between the points that are not welded. Which could probably generate an error and look equally as bad. I have even seen terrain meshes lined up and welded together tear at some points like those points were not welded. Usually I go back with the Smooth option on those joints and it puts them back to gether.

It takes two terrain patches and two different textures for blending. One solid and one alpha. There is a typewritten tute and a video tute. Check both of those out. And practice with the blending and bending of the terrain.

my suggestion to terrain making is make one brush (not too large) and make it 15x15 in Terrain mesh, then copy and paste it... that way u can get more detailed terrain features.

when i select (drag a box around) a group of vertices, then try to drag those down to make a trench...i keep missing the vertices so i have to select them again

this happens over and over since i only hit them 1 in 50 tries [cry] (this is zoomed in almost all the way)...is there any easier way to make a group of vertices drop to a specific height/depth?

Use microsoft Magnifier ;)

There might be another way though :P
