I really don't like the term "algorithm A*", it actually is a class of algorithms with certain properties. So it's better to say "we use an algorithm that is A*". But by convention a best first search with the A* property is called algorithm A*.

It doesn't matter so much for the theory, it's just a way of finding a guaranteed optimal solution in relatively short time. Purely theoretical you could replace it with a (eek) breath first search hehe. Only it would run out of mem and crawl.


Oh and, about the being dynamic, I think if you read mechandroids post carefully, the enemies go to your *last known* location. So they avoid the problem. People often think it's "cool" if AI goes to your last known location, and that it requires extra code to implement, but in reality they always do it this way to avoid the problem of dynamic path finding. Usually they just periodically check for a new path that might be better. In SOF2 this could be when an enemy hears or sees you again. This is often clear in games like C&C, where your tank will take the optimal route over the terrain, but then when you close that small canyon with tanks of your own it will get stuck.

i think on Empire Earth and Age of empires 2:the conquerors the AI is the best(well if u put it on hard or hardes difficulty that is)

I haven't played Halo.  But I've solved return to castle wolf and I've played medal of honor. SoF2 AI is the best in my opinion so far.  I see them working together especially in the jungle.  And the jump over things on their own, lean on their own too.  Plus if you play it again it's always different unlike in moh where its always the same and just an endless stream.  I find sof2 really interesting and fun even though it's probably too hard but it just means I need to get better.
