AMD's are made as cheaply as humanly possible.They have no protection against heat, crushed cores etc etc.
Intel chips are built with IHS to stop you crushing the core, and come with throttling to protect against heat.These are by no means cheap things to do.If you want a chip that you dont have to worry about when you move your PC around, and one that you know will never get crushed, or die from heat, then buy intel.
If you want bang for buck buy amd.I have a northwood and a xp btw.Both are great, but i pick intel everytime.You get what you pay for!

I see you are willing to pay $ 550 to $ 600 more for less preformance and that doesn't include the more expensive mobo that is required for pentium 4's and the slower memery

Well thats what Im wondering about. I doubt that its only the name why the pentiums are more expensive. Yes, the name drives the price up too, but not that much.

Carver, read the post. He has both. He thinks they are both great. Intel is just better. If money matters buy AMD. I buy two new cpu's every year. Last year I had a Tbird 1.4 and a XP 1800+. This year I have two 1.8A Northwood's running @ 2250 with stock cooling and stock voltage. Nothwoods rule for now.

For 250$ you can choise P4 1.6Mhz or AMD +2000. If you don't spend more money, what is seams of "better INTEL", when you can get faster AMD for same money. If you go to the top and buy CPU for more then 500$ then you can say something about the best, but are you itend to spend >500$ on CPU?

Maybe in theory the AMD 2000+ is faster than the P4 1.6, but I doubt that you'd notice any difference at all with these 2 CPU's. Besides that the speed of the cpu isn't the only factor that decides whether a computer is fast or not. The amount and access time of RAM or Cache are just as important. So spending twice the price of a 1.6Ghz P4 on a 2.2Ghz P4 won't do that much for your computer. When looking at how much extra speed you get for that extra $250, it isn't much at all.
And guess what, in about 2 years you consider both CPU's slow as sh!t and that's when you are really starting to need the full speed of a P4 1.6GGhz... but of course you'd be on the look-out for a new cpu anyway. So wanting to have the newest of the newest CPU is only a waste of money.

amd are my favourite processers but my athlon 650 is starting to show its age now slowing up on multitasking etc but i guess that was bound to happen if i get another pc i will use it as a fire wall and server just strip out some of its components and there you go
