I must confess I'm still in the steep part of the learning curve regarding PC innards. Any freezes/crashes I have, tend to be in the form of a "stuck repeating sound loop" when I back too close to a wall! (Sorry, this is the only way I know to describe it.)
I run SBLive5.1, Athlon T/Bird1400, AsusA7A266 socket A board, XP. Thank you for this thread; it has got me thinking.
When it's fine, it's very fine...thus far I've just resigned myself to its recurrence. The only spring-clean I haven't tried is an update of my board drivers(my PC supplier for some reason recommended that I don't u/grade my BIOS).
I'd welcome any of your knowledgeable input...forgive me for my lack of knowledge of such issues.

Go here and update your board drivers
http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2
Your bios should be fine a bios update isn't needed yet.
( I have the same board)

If you have an Nvidia Video Card
A geforce of any kind or TNT2 go to www.nvidia.com
and get the newest detonators on the right side of the screen of their home page.

Then go to www.creative.com and get the newest drivers for your sound card.

After you do all this then you shouldn't have any problems at all.

How much ram you got?
256 is really a minimum for XP you should ave more

can i point out that one of your poll choices is silly - "I do not have an SB card and am very unhappy". Anyone with a computer that can play SoF2 is likely to have a fairly good sound card, and no one seems to care about sound - after all it all sounds the same? Its not like a graphics card where the machine slows down if you have a bad graphics card, and a good graphics card shows noticeable changes. A rubbish sound card will play sound very similar to a top of the range one - even SS isnt that much difference IMHO

I've had so-so luck with the Soundblaster family.  I've had much better luck with the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz cards, they really rock and support EAX and all the other goodies.
