I have the old "floating  shadows" problem on my GeForce 2 64Mb, so I figured I'd take it to Activision Support.

They sent me a step by step guide to manually install SOF2 from the CDs, and a reg file to download. I Followed the procedure and ended up with nothing more then a "click" when I clicked on "New Game". Yep, a totally non-functioning SOF2.

I hope my save game backup imports fine when I do a reinstall  or I'll be an unhappy chappy!

Haven't heard of this myself but is this in regard to using like, Projection Shadows in the conguration menu? Try using Blob instead if you can, they work better anyway. Stencil shadows in the quake 3 engine ttend to be fairly buggy.

You haven't heard of the projection shadows floating out of peoples hips and knees?

There are at least 3 posts here, and a few on usenet.

Not a "big" deal, but annoying all the same  :s29:

Yeah, engine thing, dunno why they had you reinstall for that.
Projection (volumetric) shadows in *all* quake 3 engine games are pretty crap, you'll find plenty of rendering errors when they're on - seen it in Jedi Outcast, Quake 3, whatever, heck jedi outcast I've seen my own shadow projecting off the ceiling of wall as I rode down an elevator.

Just stick with blob shadows, they render just fine & perform better. Projection are just novelty crap they slow you down & don't render well either. There's no fix for them in any quake 3 game to get them to render correctly all the time.

They add no real benift to to game. just disable them completely and gain maybe a few more fps.

they will know you are coming before they see you're shadow...

The funny thing is the shadows look better when they are in blob.

I haven't had too many problems with the projection shadow, other than the occasional shadow sitting on a box that i just finished breaking, but most of the time it works fine, also, for the people that say it doesn't add anything to the game. . . well, i found it really cool that i was able see the baddies walking towards the corner i was standing at in levels such as when you have to clear out the houses in columbia. It's neat to see the shadow of a person walking toward you.

Yes it is a nice to have, but shadows have always been a top end thing.

The sound is normally enough to let let you know that some one is coming (and it will decrease your frame rate less).

One day we we will have a PC thay can take full advantage of SOF2.

just give it a couple of years...

honestly speaking ,shadows enabled can give you a distinct advantage over someone who doesn not ,,
people cast shadows thru doorways and into windows alerting you to their presence before they ever enter your (or worse their) line of site...peek around the corner and blammo ,a free frag..
