I don't see how the shadows bug has anything to do with the spec of the machine, it's a coding bug as far as I can see.

And it does have a playability benefit as some have already said. For example in the jungle standing outside the cave I could see the bad guys shadow just a second before he emerged.

I didn't know other games had the same problem though.

Yeah, its a Quake 3 engine thing I guess. The stencil shadows are just done poorly. In fact the *only* game which I thought had excellent shadows was Operation Flashpoint, though even in that shadows were still a bit prone to a few miscasting errors.

Shadow settings (alter cg_shadows)
0 - Off (in menu)
1 - Blob (in menu)
2 - Stencil (not in menu)
3 - Projection (in menu)

These are all virtually unaltered from Q3. Stencil shadows look really cool when they work - which is less than projection. They also suck up a lot more cycles.

AFAIK, projection shadows only really screw up when the NPC is sitting or near to a ledge?

Thought the only difference between 2 & 3 were the "softness" or not, of the shadow? Anyway, can check that later ;)

What about Metal Gear Solid 2?

That's a console game, so doesn't count.
