Windows 98 wont recognise more than 512MB of RAM. as long as games dont use more, i'll stick with 98.seeing as how mines a blunt~edge gaming rig ;) :p  more memory is only good for high~res photos and Mpeg stuff and all that whatnot. not my bag. but like i said no flames please i was only stateing a fact about game~speed. i thought it might be relevent towards Dynagods 3Dmark,(what was your old OS?) i got nothing against XP in particular.well!!, not the users anyway  :s25:

'Cacheman' has a 'Conservative swapfile' setting that uses your physical memory ,if you got enough, and leaves the VM to worst case scenario. its better than getting rid completly. you might run out of RAM. anythings possible with windows... :D

Windows 98 wont recognise more than 512MB of RAM.

A common myth. All Win9x OS's can address up to 1GB of memory. The problem is with Windows virtual cache (vcache), which is an area of RAM used to store frequently accesed data. This area of RAM, which also shares memory addresses with the AGP aperature, cannot exceed 800MB. So on PC's with more than 512MB, this can result in all memory addresses being consumed and result in low/out of memory situations. The solution is to restrict vcache to 512MB or less.

Another myth: Win98 and Me have "poor" memory managment. Untrue. People see their RAM "disappearing" and think the OS is not freeing up the memory when they exit an app, when in fact, the RAM that has "disappeared" has been consumed by vcache. But unlike Win95, Win98 and Me, can execute and access data from vcache just as it were free available memory. The cache is flushed as needed to support the new data.

So if you want to add another 512MB, go ahead and do it.  :)

Yeah but we all know that the memory management in 9X windows doesnt do as well as NT. Well that and the fact that you dont have to reboot the system on XP when something crashed. BSD happen far less on XP than 9X. Also the NT kernel handles multithreading and SMP. I.E. a NT based system is superior for quake 3 games (its supports multiproc).
And I also know for a fact that the TCP/IP stack in 9X is crap compared to the NT stacks.
9X sucks, the only thing it had going for it was lower overhead (so its a little faster) and the best compatibility with games. Since XP has come out, I have yet to buy a new game that doesnt run well on it. #### DOS runs faster than windows but you dont run that do you? (Oh wait win98 sits on top of dos) <- huge reason why 9x blows.
And of course to help fan the flames, doesnt matter anyways UNIX rules over all.  :s28:
