Hey All,

I was hoping to get a quick tutorial on Alpha textures. I was looking at the KAM map and although I was able to pick them apart, I still couldn't figure it out!

Any hints or tips!

Thanks guys!

Alpha textures in sof2 are in the .png format.

The way the alpha layer works is by embedded inside the file information is a "Mask" which is a solid filled outline of any areas in your PNG you wish to have transparent.

You combine this with a shader in the game to basically tell it, "Any area of this .PNG you draw that has this mask, make transparent"

I cannot tell you how to do it step by step in Photoshop, but I believe if you search it out, someone went through it before.

I use Paint Shop Pro myself. (A lot easier to swallow $149 than $700)

Easiest way is to take a raven alpha channel texture and base yours on that. ie load it in photoshop and check out the properties of it... copy the shader and adapt it to suit your new texture...

Job done...

It looks to me that this has been discussed with myself included a while back. I could never get these kind of textures to work. I know it can be done. lol The m32build would be cool but it is for SOF and Targa.
oofunk may have a good idea on opening up one of raven's alpha textures. I am sure the shader would have to be also made. We need a complete tutorial for this from someone that is versed in PaintShop and Photoshop. For making a basic alpha texture including a shader. Any volunteers?

i have done it before but never from scratch...

Had a tga with the alpha channel already and then got a stock shader that had an alpha channel and simple change the paths and the material etc etc... worked fine

There are loads of photoshop tuts out there... but i think you just select all teh areas you want to be transparent and paste them to a 4th alpha channel..... maybe ill have a play...

GDietrich dend me your file ill have a go basing it on the one i made...

How did I not notice that?

I must have been too tired (well it was 10:21pm in my time zone). lol

I hope someone does do a tutorial on alpha channels because I havn't had much luck with them either. The only way I have managed to get them to work was by doing what funk said, but I would like to know why they work (the shader part). [confused]
