| Quote (T¥RANITH @ June 19 2002, 05:32 am) | The OICW, as John Mullins himself added in his recent interview, is way too complicated a weapon to use properly in most environments usefully (espesh when being shot at ). As far as I can see it would not be that useful except for in RMGs, where you have the time to mess about with the grenades and the lase system. In anything like close confines, it would be not much other than a normal AR with a scope. |
Useless in buildings but deadly in the great out doors. |

Remove the NV capability as the rules are currently armor OR NV. Change the THREAT indicator to a FRIEND indicator. Scope up = Forced semi-automatic fire only. Scope down = all 3 firing modes would be fine. Since it fires the same round as the M4, it's not that powerful when compared to the AK. Reduce the number of 20mm's to 2. (If you want to mess with lasing and firing, feel free. Your exposure time to get lased will be your demise.) That should about do it, right? ADDENDUM: Swapping out the M4 for the OICW could be a viable option as well. (I hate grenade spam myself.) |

I know this thread's old but it was the most recent SOF II thread actually about SOF II. Our ICS Mod for SOFA II has had the OICW for close to a year now and it has definitely not been regarded as lame the way we've implemented it. Besides firing the computer-bobulated 20mm HEAB round the OICW also fires more conventional KE (kinetic energy) rounds which has the advantage of being a lot simpler to fire. The advantage of a 20mm KE round is it's simplicity, massive load and the fact that it's fired from a rifled barrel rather then 'launched' like a 40mm grenade giving it flatter trajectory and more range then a 40mm launched grenade. On the flip side 20mm KE and CE (contact explosive) rounds carry very little in the way of a fragmentation payload so they have a very small effective radius, they're also is sub-sonic and slow moving. What we did in ICS was to crudely scale all this by: stripping out the TA/FCS targeting goo-gaws, make the travel speed of the 20mm munition slow enough to avoid if you move the instant you hear the weapon fired, gave the 20mm grenade rifle ROF that's useful but not lame, and make the 20mm munition do low indirect damage with a very small damage radius. Our approach really only makes the OICW an effective weapon for getting that crafty well covered sniper or defensive player -- you can empty your six 20mm grenades and splash him kill him but more typically get him to displace where you can have at him with the 5.56mm rifle. You can get one shot direct hit kills, but the ROF and travel time of 20mm grenades is so slow it's takes a lot of skill and cool, as you'll usually have a sweater made out of you by auto fire from an assault rifle or SMG. It balances out to be a fun and challenging weapon that actually serves a purpose, but is definitely not ease to use or 'lame'. |
