I get 20-30 fps (in singleplayer of course) and it is perfectly playable.

Holy poo-poo, you guys are getting 50+ fps?? Man it is seriously time for my system to go. I am getting like 12 or so on the first part of the first level, then it like drops to about...3? My computer sucks

You don't really need a framerate above 30 FPS. However, since your framerate can be drastically affected by firefights, grenade explosions or just by seeing more then a couple of people on screen at once, you should aim for at least double that. No point having a resolution of 1600x1200, full anti-alias'n, shadows, texture quality at max etc if everytime you get into a minor firefight your frame drops to 10 or less.
