I know it's been asked before, but i couldn't find a good enough topic to fill.

I've got a athlon 500, 128mb ram and a voodoo 3 16mb card.

I bought the game yesterday, didnt actually look at the specs in the shop i was just happy to find the game. So in the car i started getting nervous when i checked the minimum specs..

Now i've completed the Prague part, had to raise the settings a little from the absolute bottom where the game had set them, to be able to see my opponents etc, and it went well through half the colombia mission too, but at the mission where you run up to the helicopter the game became unplayable (almost).

Now i'm thinking of upgrading, it will be a Geforce3ti200 64mb and another 128mb ram (which is all i can afford, i cant buy a new computer even though i know i need one), but my question is:
Will it run? I don't want to spend $400 on the card, memory and a 80g hd if the game still will be unplayable because of my 500mhz athlon.

I'm asking this on the 3 forums that matter for me (Operation-flashpoint, Soldier of fortune 2, B17 2) before i go out and buy the stuff..

the upgrade you are considering will do you great wonders.  i highly doubt you will see it as anything but $130 well spent.

Your athlon will still be a huge bottleneck..but by buying a gf3 you'll be improving your fps a lot.

Make sure your motherboards agp slot will support such a card, you have an adequate power supply and cooling/ventilation, and be careful about mixing memory types/brands.

These problems have occurred for others here.

Well this was certainly a wake-up call.. I never even considered that, i have a Compaq (with all the problems that comes with that), so i just spent 1½ hours trying to find information about the agp slot (agp 2.0 compatible or not). Nothing on compaq.com or anywhere else, i finally found it on a yugoslavian site...

I think i'll go for building a new one instead, i saved money for my domain and hotel, but i guess i can hope that i can get some again before november then..

Thanks for your help

I've got exactly same pc as you have Varj (Compaq desktop 5831),

I only upgrade from
64mb to 256mb and from
the voodoo 3 16 mb to a Geforce 4 ti 4600
I've got 10 Gb hd plus 80 Gb hd

Sof2 is still SLOW, the upgrades didn't do much for me, so it will not do great wonders, Kyleb.

It's really funny because I had posted exactly the same question with the same specs.

I have a Compaq Presario and noticed that my card would only run in APG 1.0, so I downloaded NVmax and this allowed me to run the card at 2.0 speed.  So make sure you're not running in 1.0 (which is almost as slow as PCI).  I've read some articles about this, and it just seems to be an incompatibity with certain Athlon models and Via motherboards.   :s23:  :s2:
