We'd like the people whose machines lock up at any time in SOF2 to report the results of a simple test. We'd like you to install a free motherboard monitoring program called, oddly enough, "Motherboard Monitor". Reporting the results from using this monitor during gameplay will give us a helpful standard by which we can compare the performance of various systems in the hopes of diagnosing lockups. Here's what you do:

1) download the latest version (5.1.9.1) of Motherboard Monitor here.
2) using the help files, set it up to report temperatures from your machine as realtime readings in your system tray
3) write down the temperature of your machine with nothing running (in other words, BEFORE you run the game)
3) run SOF2 in a window (set Fullscreen to None in the Video Settings) so you can see the system tray temperatures while you play
4) repeat whatever steps work on your machine to produce a lockup...as you play the game, keep note of the temperatures in the the system tray
5) post the results of your experiment here

I did this on an AMD/Geforce4 and the entire process of installation and testing took about twenty minutes. Some systems won't have any sensors for Motherboard Monitor to use, so don't worry if you can't get your computer set up properly to run this test.

That'd be great sir, if I could even get into the game itself. The lockup happens for me right on the Activision startup animation. It hard locks right here and I have to reboot. Is there a way to bypass the startup aniamtions? Like a switch to upt on the shortcut along the lines of -nostartup ? i know lucasarts games have these kind of switches.

Hmm not many people replying to this topic.  I have the lock up problem but mbm doesn't seem to report my temp correctly (it just says 127 and never changes).  Hurry up and lets get this sorted people!

Have you set it up properly?
I set this up on my system just to test it even though I'm not having a problem and my board comes with it's own monitoring program.
It reported the exact same temps as the native program
It's a good way to get everyone on the same page as to reporting heat conditions that could be causing lockups.
There have been numerous people, who after looking into this possibilty, have resolved the issue of lockups by implementing proper cooling.
I see alot of people have viewed this thread, but no one has reported anything back.
Any reports, good bad or otherwise would be nice.

I have the MBM installed allready... I usually lie around 50 +-1 c....havent done the exact test as described above, but my computer locks after about 30-45 minutes, and after a reboot the temp. is 57-58 c . This goes both for single and multiplayer.
My computer specs:
XP 1900+
Radeon 8500
K7S5A moBoard
640MB RAM
SB PCI

Spaeter, it'd be very helpful if you could run the game in a window and post the last temperature displayed before the game locked up.

my .02

I will try the motherboard monitor this evening when I get home.

I have already posted my issue in several threads, so I will not recap.  However, I am getting lockups in the single player version only.  Right as the first mission begins, and the hotel door opens, it locks up hard.  I believe the issue is sound related, because when I disable audio driver, I can play with no lockups.  It also locks up in the Random Missions.

I played some Multiplayer last night with no problems at all.  Played for about one hour with sound, and graphics set to 1024x768x32, high geo, normal textures.  Played like a dream.

These crashes seem to be only a bug with Single Player.

Hi keith
I did as i was told...
Played Team Deathmatch, in a window, for an hour before a lock... The game ran perfect at stable 57c...and then locked at 57c!
Im playing with the all the nice graphics turned on, at 1024x768 on win2k.

Interesting. Does it do the same thing in when it locks up in singleplayer?

Havent done "the Test" in singleplayer yet...but lockup is the same: screen freezes (sometimes it goes black), and the sound loops like a machinegun...
I'll try the test on singleplayer..maybe tomorrow (it's getting late where i'm at...).
