For those of you experiencing hard locks, I can just about guarantee it is hardware and/or driver related.
It doesn't mean squat if other games ran fine. You are using driver components that have never been utilized before as this game taxes your system in ways no other game is capable of doing at the moment.
If you're overclocking, drop it back to normal. For those of you that don't know, by bumping up your fsb you are overclocking everything. Perhaps your memory can't handle that. Or one of your pci cards. Or your agp slot or card.
Blow out all your drivers and start over if need be.
Video drivers first, then chipset, then the rest of your drivers. It's done in this order for a reason. Some vid card drivers install their own agp driver. Not good.
Make sure you have the latest certified drivers for everything. Make sure you have proper cooling. Especially for these highend vid cards and processors.
A lot of the cases I see on the market suck both in cooling and in power supplies.
Be sure to disable any antivirus before installing anything. Especially drivers.
It is not a gforce or an amd problem as I'm running both. Along with a via based soyo dragon+.
If you're using one of those half breed boards with mixed chipsets for the northbridge and southbridge, they are known to have problems.
Look for updated bios for you board as well as chipset drivers.
Make sure you don't have a pci card in slot 1 if you vid card even allows for that.
DO NOT mix memory types/speeds. This is a big no no. Again, just because it worked before doesn't mean squat.
Ask Wid about this one. Ask Hammer about cooling the vid card.
There may be bugs in the game, but I guarantee you some of your problems are on your end. A patch isn't going to help you if that's the case.
Laugh, biscuit eater, flame all you want. I suggest you look into these things real serious like.
If you don't know what you're doing, find someone who does.

i dont want to laugh, biscuit eater, or flame, i do want to clear up one misconception presented here.  by your statment about memory types, assumeing you mean brands.  if by types you mean ddr, sdr and rdram i would like to point out that only a few motherboads will alow physicly alow the use of more than one type and they only alow the use of one type at a time.  also mixing memory speeds is not a big no no and is just as trouble free as mixing brands when done properly.

my current setup incudes:

256mb corsair xms-2400 cas2.5
256mb crusial pc-2100 cas2
512mb nec pc-266 cas2

the crorsair is certified capable at running at a higher speed than the other two moduals but also requiers a slghtly higher cas latency.  hence to insure satblity the setup must be run at the speed of the slower two rated modules (133mhz) and the cas latecy capable of the highest module (cas2.5).
if i took the crosair out i could run at cas2 without worry and if i took the crucial and nec out i could run run the memory at 150mhz without worry, speaking strictly of the memory bus that is as raising the system bus 150mhz also puts the pci bus at 37.5 mhz and the agp bus at 75 mhz.

as i mention before i am not posting this as any sort of atack on ramrod.  i simply want to prevent people from takeing a misscoseption as fact and runing out and buying new memory when it will only help if your old stuff was running out of spec and beond its ablitys or if it is defective.

hu, i dont think i know it all by any mean but i feel confdent that the jedec are in place to avoid the problems you are referning to.  at least for sdram.  as for rdram they have their own set of standards, but as far as im consered rambus can kiss my a**.  as for wid, i cant say i know of his expereance but i cant help but wondering if advanced memory timeings might have been responcable for his trouble as i have seen situations before were two sticks can run at a given setting indivdualy yet when combined cause problems.

anyway, tell ya what, im off to play some cs with some friends but a bit later when i have time will give your advice the benifit of the doubt despite my own convictions and i will pull two sticks and see if my crashes go away.  if they do i owe ya a beer :D

I agree on the rimms.

Hope it works for you. Not so I can say I'm right though. :s20:
Just like to see you get it working.

hope ya like extra stout, its all i have in the fridge atm:D

i may be jumping a little ahead of myself as the game still crashes when i remove the config and it trys to auto detect my hardware, however i played all the way though the columbia levels without a hitch after removeing all but one 256mb. unforunatly, when i went to swap sticks for my 512mb i was a bit hastey and didnt remove power from the board and when i pushed the dimm down i managed to ground the board to the tray and got that lovely smell of burnt electronics.  amazingly it powered up just fine and seems to be working just the same as i played though a few more levels without a problem.  sence at this point i can't blame anything but my own stupity for any stablity problems i might incure, i figured i should go ahead and pay up as promised, at least virutualy;)

I've tried useing different dets for my Gf3Ti500=no luck :(. I updated my IWill KA266-r to the latest BIOS=no luck :( . I updated my AGP/Chipset drivers for my ALi~chipset to the latest 1.90version=no luck :(. for my SoundB@stard live5.1(drivers only) there is no update! if anyone can point me towards some WDM drivers for the 5.1 for win98 i'd appreciate it and try them ;) ...

Hang on to that bottle. Perhaps we can meet up at the hotel in Prague or something and celebrate then. :s20:

Booni-

I had no luck finding any new drivers for you either. Might I suggest since you are using 98 that perhaps you could have an irq conflict with that card.
Try one these sugestions.
Move that card to a different slot.
Remove it altogether and see if the problem goes away.

Judging from Kylebs post and another in this forum as well as several emails and PMs I received overnight, this thread has helped a few people resolve their lockups.
Glad to hear it.

So I'll pin it in hopes it might help others resolve their problems as well.

I moved the soundblaster a while back before i installed SoF(it was sharing an IRQ with the AGP slot!;) but now they both got there own IRQ's. the only thing they share with are IRQ holders for PCI steering(whatever that is!;). there are'nt any conflicts though. i checked for them...
I have tried another reinstall, but no joy... :(

I do not think my lock ups/reboots are hardware related.

In win2k, i can run mutiplayer FINE, no problems, works 100%.
In win2k, single player locks up, reboots, crashes etc.

In winxp, when I start multiplayer, the PC reboots instantly.
In winxp, I can SOMETIMES play single player WITHOUT A PROBLEM, works great, love the gore, good fps @ 1280x1024.
Other times, crashes 1 sec into the game, 10 seconds in, or just doesn't load at all.
I can however, run random missions with much more success, no problems with those.

So, this is NOT a hardware problem, sorry to say.

I re installed all my drivers, and all the critical updates etc for winxp are installed. No new bios is available for my board. I have not overclocked anything, and I know the CPU/System temp are fine. My ram is not in high performance mode, all settings are default. I have tried in high performance mode, with custom settings, still does not work.

This is a case of some real bad bugs in the game. Lack of QA? I dunno, I hope the up-coming patch sorts these problems out. :s17:  :s17:  :s17:  :s17:
