Reboots out of nowhere are caused by one of two things.
Bad board.
Bad power supply.
Or both.
I have yet to see any software cause a system to reboot out of the clear blue.

Oh, the multi-player demo did it as well. Insta-reboot. NOTHING else I run does this. And don't tell me nothing taxes my system like SOFII.

Like I said, random missions WORK FINE. The reboots ARE a bug with the game.

3dmark 2001 SE demo, THAT taxes your system, the nature scene? If it was a power problem/bad hardware problem, I might have noticed it before.

Perhaps it is.
But like I said, I have run across this problem at least a dozen times in the last year (including on my own work system) and it was resolved every time by either replacing the board, power supply, or both.

I'll make sure someone at Raven sees this just to make sure it doesn't get overlooked if it is a game problem.

Also, im not saying they did a bad job with this game.

It works great on my other PC, which is much lower spec than this one. It is probably just something with a particular combination of hardware/software. I dunno, might be the mouse im using, might be the keyboard, mabye it is my sound card and my processor combination.

Who knows, but it is a great game in any case, and would be nice to see it working on this  (better) system.  :s18:

Why don't you list all your system specs, including board/chipset and all drivers versions etc.
Be as specific as possible and don't leave anything out.
Perhaps we can can solve it. :s20:

Ok, specs are as follows:

Winxp Pro, DX8.1 (4.08.01.0810)
300 Watt AMD Approved PSU.
Abit KX7-333 Motherbaord, Latest Via 4 in 1 Drivers. Original Bios, no newer one exists (as far as I know).
80 Gig IBM 120GXP Hard Drive.
Geforce 2 Ultra (Hercules brand) (28.32 Dets, From nvidia)
Athlon XP 1900 (non overclocked - 133fsb)
512 MB PC2700 Ram, Samsung. (166 Mhz DDR, Default Bios settings)
Hercules Game Theatre XP Soundcard (Version 4.10 Drivers - Tried all hardware acceleration settings (none to full)
Creative DXR3 DVD Decoder card, disabled.
Altatel USB ADSL Modem (original drivers)
Creative 6x DVD Drive.
LG 40X Cd-rom Drive.
Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer (USB - Winxp default drivers)
Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro (USB as well, Winxp default drivers)
IBM P200 monitor, but I doubt this has an effect.
3com 10/100mbs PCI network card (latest driver version)

I have tried using the multiplayer config thing, no go.
Tried switching to direct input, does not help.
Tried various graphics settings, different resoloutions (with and without refresh-rate fixes).

I also tried upping the CPU and Ram voltages, incase the extra power reqs of the AGP slot dropped those too low. This had no affect.

just a FYI :)
windows XP by default doesn't display a BSOD but reboots the computer. so software problems can/will reboot machines running XP with default settings. also Xp has a known problem with geforce 2/3 graphics cards that cause this BSOD/reboot.

Any time I have problems with certain applications, I go look through every bulletin board and newsgroup I can find. Every time I've had a problem, someone else out there has had the same problem, and someone else has found a solution. Look on bulletin boards and newsgroups for your motherboard, video card, sound card, etc. Underclocking my Radeon 8500 slightly fixed the lockups I had in games. Now if Raven would fix the "flashing" that occurs with Radeon 8500 cards and SoF2. ;)

Guinness tastes much better out of a can, in my unimportant, useless opinion.

as to ramrods mention of my slight problem  and  memory

i have 2 -256 meg dimms

both are made  by mircon ..both were  bought  from www.crucial.com ..(tho 11 months apart )

dimm  1 is a  pc-133  sd ram  module
cas 2 latencey

the incompatblity stems from one dim ..(dimm 1)

is  overclockable  to a cas 3 range   of 143 mghz or accordiong to sci soft sandra will function fine  at 143 mghz at a cas latency setting of 3 rather then 2 ..well it's a pc 150 dimm  i suppose then ..

the other is a straight cas 2 latency pc 133 sd ram dimm ..

both are high grade  dimms   but SOF 2 locks up if i install both ..

if i install one or the other  the game runs fine ...

and yea i have the up to date bios and drivers for everything ...sometimes memory chips will play tricks on ya

here  is an example

no the game will not  run and crashes with the  2 256 meg dimms installed  ..if i add a third dimm  that is  say pc 100  memory  64 meg in size ..the game  again functions normally (since the  pc 100 dimm slows down the memory clock speed  i suppose to adjust  everything )

and yes the FSB speed of my system is set  for a p 3 600 /133   in my bios ... and the memory runs at 133mghz  ..i get a warning message  in scisoft sandra sayin dimm 3 is running over it's  rated speed .. but the game works  if i do that ..but  the pc 100 dimm gets hot as heck  ..thus raising my mainboard temps  ..and my cpu temps  ..thus many mainboards are set to reboot when this occurs ..for me thats an option in my soyo mainboards bios ..hint ..(CHECK THE BIOS SETTINGS  FOR YOUR MOTHERBOARD FOLKS)

*(especially if  your sysetem  is rebooting itself    look at the temps for your cpu as well as motherboard and mem chips are running at)

if i pop in a cas 2 latency 512  meg single dimm  i have no isssiues

memory must be compatable and must match as far as type and speed

bios must match  settings for memory type and speed ..

i have a third system useing  3 -256 meg pc 100 dimms all from the same manufactuer   ..all the same speed   and the game functions normally

sof 2 is a resource  PIG  and will push your system to it's limits ..and yea thats a good thing :)

if you need more info on your syetm  or the memory installed i highly suggest ya download  sandra

it's a free ware test program that will tell you everything you need to know about your current  system config ..even down to bios version and  motherboard temp   as well as type and revision of your mainboard

http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/sandra

hope this post helps some of you resolve your issiues  ..

me i had to format my system 3 times till i relized  ..yep the prob was in the memory chips  not matching cas latency  and type ..again i have a p 3  mainboard   ..so dunno how much this will affect AMD users  ..it will probably have  more  of an effect  for AMD users  as  alot of AMD boards  do have a setting in the bios that will reset the machine  if temps get too high

and yes the really goofy part is  older games run well with both those dimms in  = conclusion SOF 2 pushes the quake 3 engine as well as all your hardware    very hard    to deliver the game experience that it does  ..is it  bug filled  ..no i think not as i worked out my  end ..and the game runs decent now  .. tho on my paltry p 3 600 system ..well ..single player ..it's a bit choppy at 1024X768

multiplayer works  great tho since it does not  involve all the high res textureing  plus the AI  that the single player game requires

was the beta easier  as far as system resources .. sure .. it was a beta ..the full game  does require   a good fast  balanced system for the best results
