I purchased a HP XT983 with an Athlon 1.4GHZ,128mb ram,40GB Hard drive,Windows XP,and CD-RW.Have since added 512 mb ram,Geforce 4 Ti,another 40GB Hard Drive, and a Soundblaster live card, along with the 5.1 speaker system.I've spent I would guess around $2000 for this system. Now it's been a pretty good system UNTIL these new Quake 3 games started coming out and i was finally able to see how this machine would perform with them.Well let me tell you, this machine don't perform worth a ####.The same slow down that happens in soldier of fortune 2 happens in Jedi Knight 2,if there is no enemys on the screen the most I'll get is 20 FPS and they start coming towards me it'll drop down to 2 FPS.I know it has a Via Chipset but I don't know what the motherboard is because I haven't been able to identify it yet.I went to HP's website and all it says is it is a KL133.It's hard to find anything on this machne.I still have a lot to learn about computers, but I understand the chipset is a kl133 but  who is this motherboard from??I tried out Sandra and it says it from Trigem Computers Inc.Who are they??I haven't been able to find anything on trigem, any help would be aprreciated.Bad support from them I guess, they hardly have anything on this computer, and they have no downloads for this computer as of yet.Now I also have a Gateway 500MHZ Celeron,15GB Hard Drive,256 Ram,and a GEforce2 MX400,Windows 98 and Soldier Of Fortune 2 runs flawlessly with everything maxed out,the FPS will never drop under 90.Now how can that be!!The Hp is three times the system compared to the Gateway, and it has a cheap video card in it.I've tried it all with this #### computer, downloaded the latest NVidia Drivers(29.40)available at www.guru3d.com and also the 4in1 drivers and the latest sound card drivers from creative.Went through the bios several times to make sure I didn't miss anything,There is nothing else I can think of that can be wrong,It has to be something simple i'm missing but i can't seem to find it.The next step is I'm going to sell this thing and never buy another computer which has Ahtlon written on it!!It Will be a Pentium 4 or celeron!!Any help would be very much appreciated.Thank You

Important Someone Please Answer.
I have a gigabyte 7DXR motherboard and I bought it with 128 mb PC2100 DDR Ram. The Ram amount is small but thats all I could afford. Anyway yesterday I bought a new stick of 512mb RAM 2100 DDR. I put it in the first RAM slot and then 128mb in the second. However, my computer kept crashing about 5 mins into JO,RTCW and SOF 2 multi test. Now I was having the odd problem before but could the crashing be because of the RAM? Can you just stick another RAM simm in like that? I have since taken the 128mb out but I have used my computer enough to test if its cured. In the motherboard manual it makes no reference to having a 512 and 128 simm together. Is this extra RAM likely to be the problem? And if it is maybe its the problem for you guys too. Its a shame not to use the extra RAM simm. Or is it dimm?

So somebody respond?

yea it could be the ram, you need to wait and see if it still crashes with the 128 out

Mixing ram is bad.  Dump the 128 and go with the 512.  You should be fine.

You should have called your post:

"HP computers 5 months of problems"

It's not your CPU, it's the crap it's mounted in.
Next time, build it yourself.

Yeah your right on that one,for the money i ended up spending I could of built a better machine and for less.It was wrong on my part to blame AMD for this.I can assure you though I'll never purchase an HP again!! I think it has something to do with the motherboard,I am seriously thinking of selling it while it's still worth something.

my first 2 computers were HP's, they are great family computers..just not for hardcore gamers. I ended up scraping my second one and using the cpu/ram/drives to build a new computer. ahh memories :p

the above post it right - Hps/dell etc fine for simple family word crap but horrible for gamers. alienware is the only manufacturer that i know of that builds good gaming rigs but i suggest building it yourself cuz you can get it for a lot less.
