I've noticed on the GTA3 site they are having some XP and Nvidia specific problems. Im curious if our FPS problems might be OS specific. I am of course referring to the people who have a super low FPS even after turning everything down.

mmm... i'm running it on WinXP Pro

pIII 500
256MB RAM
Geforce 3

and I have no trouble running the game with great quality graphics... i do have slow down every once in a long while... but that is the CPU bottle necking the videocard.

Time to get a new CPU... but I gonna wait for the new 64bit CPU's to come out b4 looking for something.

yep your CPU is bottlenecking your vid card. My friend and I were in the same situation as you, we both had gf3 cards, but slow CPU's, p2 450 and p3 550...once we stuck in new chips it opened up a lot...

WRONG!

I have Windows 98 SE, 2000 Pro and XP Pro. I have done clean installs of each then installed this game. All on the exact same hardware.

Windows XP = Absolutely horrible, unplayable Frame Rate (7 - 30). OpenAL enables EAX.

Windows 2000 = Very bad, but playable frame rate (15 - 40). OpenAL not tested. Crashed/locked up at random.

Windows 98 SE = Playable, but still unacceptably poor frame rate (19 - 80) but the best of the 3 and it drops to the bottom less frequently or severely. EAX will not work. OpenAL causes an instant, nasty, hard lockup when the game is launched.

Best scenario so far. Win98 w/o EAX averaging 40 FPS. Windows XP is crap. Can't play it.

AntiSnipe, Whats your system specs. As for you problem with openal and eax, wierd that it happens on 3 different OSs. Sounds like a hardware issue or chipset conflict, etc.
