If you're experiencing an inexplicably low framerate and you've tried lowering your graphics settings, updating your drivers, and making sure you don't have any memory/cpu hogs running, please do the following:

1) run the game and type "com_speeds 1" at the console
2) also type "cg_drawfps 1" at the console
3) get to a spot in the game where your framerate is bottoming out
4) type "r_screenshot" at the console (the F11 key is bound to this by default)
5) include the screenshot (it's in the "base/screenshots" folder where you installed the game) along with a description of your system settings and mail them to I'll need to know your operating system, processor speed, processor type (specifically if it's an AMD or Intel), RAM, sound card, type of video card and how much memory it has.

** NOTE ** Please please please make sure you've tried all of the suggestions in the singleplayer performance FAQ before going through the steps laid out above.

I think also including the graphics and sound settings would help too, to at least weed out the people who are configing the game higher than their hardware can handle.

Also could you recommend the best specific settings for raw frame rate performance?

For the most part I get good framerates, but occasionally when using the RMG,  it will bottom out to 1-2fps, even at 640x480. If anyone wants to try this, start the RMG, choose Assasination as mission type, Hills for location, Day for time of day, Consultant or SOF for difficulty, Disable Time limit. Choose default loadout. For seed, type:

KICKSOMEASS

Make sure the seed is in all caps.

Does the fps start out smooth and then tank completely regardless of graphics settings?

Not to sound like a total idiot, but how do you read the fps after typing in the commands?  Is it the second set of numbers on the left hand side?

Methinks its time to lock this thread before it winds up suffering from NWN forum syndrome.

I found the single biggest framerate improver is to move the in-game aniso filter slider all the way left. Increased from 17-19FPS to 40-75FPS on some missions.

when i type "cg_drawfps1" it says in the console command unknown, but when i type "com_speeds 1" i get like a fps counter

The single biggest cause of lower performance in this game is Raven codeing the game to default to 100% anisotropic filtering. That was a bad, bad, mistake.

Go into the advance options and back aniso all the way down. That alone will give you several more FPS on nVidia cards.
