i will send a note to raven so they can fix this, in the mean time hope this helps some of you guys! :s3:

first i will say i have a 64MB oxygen vx1 agp model, this is a permedia3 based card -- it shows up as unknown in the video menu. (i have a voodoo2 as well, it wasnt detected either)

you are not able to select the correct settings in the menu if your video card wasnt properly autodetected by the game. this has the potential to create TREMENDOUS LAG no matter what scalability settings you have chosen. this is because in the pk3 file there are .cfg files that define additional scalabitity cvars.

the difference between my using card_permedia3.cfg instead of card_unknown.cfg is incredible, i was lagging even in the menu system before i fixed it!!!

to fix it you can open the pk3 file to discover the name of your appropriate .cfg file, then run the game and pull down the console with shift+~ and execute it. heres what mine looks like to execute:

exec scalability\card_permedia3.cfg

it will then say the changes will take effect upon restarting, to restart the video system type:

vid_restart

Is this a confirmed fix.  If so I will add it to my document.  Let me know.

yes it is a confirmed fix, this will work for anyone if they have an undetected card. so if you have a generic geforce2 that shows as "Unknown" in the video menu you just execute card_geforce2.cfg from the console as i have shown how to do in my previous post. ;)

narc,

I have a ATI FireGL 8800 card, what command do I use to get SoF2 to recognize my card.  I had a feeling because it wasn't exactly detecting it that that was the reason why it would sometimes let me get into game and sometimes just hang on me.

Note that to find the directory where your appropriate graphics card .cfg file is located is in here

C:\Program Files\Soldier of Fortune II - Double Helix\base\therest.pk3\scalability

Does the exec scalability\card_whatever.cfg have to be run everytime you play?

i think your ATI FireGL 8800 is a radeon? if so then card_radeon.cfg is what you would use. you only have to do it once, after that it will be stored in myconfig.cfg and set automatically when you run the game.

if you dont know what you have or yours isnt really listed then you can first make a backup of myconfig.cfg and try any of the card .cfg files to find a closer match, it shouldnt hurt anything. if you mess up and the game wont display just delete base\myconfig.cfg and restore your backup.

the file stores your key bindings too, that is the only reason i said to make a backup -- to keep you from having to set those again :) -- the game will create another of these files automatically using default settings if it doesnt exist at startup so if you lost your backup dont worry.

If your card comes up as unknown, please bring down the console, type r_lastValidRenderer and tell me what it says and the type of video card you have.
