Right this is more of your guys and girls opinion rather than a question.

I have an idea for a beach rather than it being a Omaha style beach, something more along the lines of Point du Hoc, so a small beach with tall cliffs that are inclimbale.

Now for making these cliffs, my first idea was the models, however these are really far too big for what im looking for, and more what i may use for background. And as Cod2 doesnt allow for modelscale_vec it makes it impossible to get them right size wise.
Second idea was to go with a patch just bend it over at the top, to look slightly more like it. But it did limit to where i could actually "join" together the patches, to go around corners and such.
My last idea was a terrain patch. I dont know if anyone has had this problem, but you cant edit the patch while the patch is upright (you can edit it, but it doesnt work quite right) really very hard to explain, but have a go you'll see what i mean. This meaning i had to edit the patches while they were lying down then rotate them, making it almost impossible to actually guess what it willl look like, and atfer spending ages trying, nothing looked that good.

Maybe its above my mapping skill, but i dont think so. I mean nothings to hard if you put your mind to it:D
I cant get anything looking really good, my last maps have been somewhat lacking in the little extra that makes a good map great. I want to change that.

So if you were making cliffs how would you go about making them?

i've done it with terrain patches i agree it's hard to tell how it will look but just don't make the patches to dense and edit some small details while they are inplace

here's a screenie of what my cliffs looked like in an unfinished map if you want to ill send it over to you

At first I thought it would be very difficult to make a rock or hill face, especially the convex or concave corners but I found a method which simplified it and made it very easy to do. If you need me to explain how I do it let me know and I will try to explain with a series of screenshots within the editor, or if you pm me your email I will send you a .map of the hill section for you to look at. [casanova] Here's a few screenshots taken ingame showing my method which really looks effective ingame.

I have a plateau in my map that had sheer cliffs with a rock texture applied. During beta testing people complained about the lack of realism. So I tried to edit them for some features. I ended up converting them from curve patches to terrain patches. I was able to edit them in the upright position with no real problems except it was hard to pick the vertices I wanted to move. In the end I am editing the patches one or two at a time by selecting "Alt H" to hide all other components and then using all three views to narrow down the vertice selection. Still I am not really satisfied with the results. I have used dense patches with many selection options and the effect is not really very realistic in my view. I was concerned with creating paths down the cliffs so I had some rather large vertice movement in spots that did not really fit the textures too well but it will help game play. Both of the examples posted in this thread are better looking than what I have. But any verticle surface will become a barrier or not depending on your goal. As a new map designer I was forced to accept the conclusion that I could work forever and not be able to achieve what my minds eye had envisioned much like the proverbial basement band or find a happy medium that satisfied my needs and figure that with time and experience I will be able to improve my techniques. We all see custom maps with cliffs constantly but how many really look good? The limits of the possibilities are of your creation and the engines capabilities. Test the limits and you will find what you are looking for in time grasshopper! Sorry for rambling! Alt
