Hi all,
We just finished our first map. It is a map inspired from the Mansion in ScarFace. It came out great, but it seems to be laggy. Could this be an issue w/ the map itself and if so how do you fix it?

Did you use caulk? If you didn't or missed large areas, I've found this can lower your frame rate...

Have a look for information on the following subjects to understand and solve your problem:

'VIS'
'Portals'
'Detailed brushes'
'Structual brushes'

This should help your 'lagging' issue. Also make sure all brushes are made from caulk, and only apply a texture to the face you see. This prevent hte game having to render surfaces that the player cannot see.

meaning render the brushes you can see while playing a game ,cast caulk on the outside of the skybox also under neath the map like under the grass and anything under your floor ,any roofs that you cant get on top of or see from the ground caulk ,,so to lower your lagg and fps then caulk caulk caulk

also portals if its outside helps and then final compiles ....[rocking]

[wink] I will get to the caulkin!!!! Now that I think of it, it was fine when I couldn't get my custom textures to work and not that I have everything covered is when the problem started. That also explains why the outside of my building does not say caulk anymore!! Thanks so much for everyone's replies if it weren't for the tutorials and your help the past two days I have spent on this map would be meaningless!!!

Well the lag is gone and the map runs smooth except for 1 thing. Now I don't know if it's just me, but it seems to glitch a little while people are playing or when I take a screenshot. If I just run around the map by myself I do not see any glitches but when people are playing I notice them. It isnt texture glitches, more like movement glitches... I guess. Hard to explain.

can u go to imageshack.com and upload some screenshots of the map it sounds like you need to add some portals yeah so its not too sluggish ...if you need help just send in pics and tell us exactly what it is and whoever can help will..

Sorry to hijack this thread, but am I understanding correctly, do you need to caulk underneath terrain patches to increase your fps ?.

You can't caulk terrain, I don't think, but ALL normal brushes, should have a nice Caulky centre, and then texture ONLY on the visible faces.

To do this; Ctrl + Shift + Click on the face of the brush, with the texture selected.

The issue with your performance might be related to your hosting. How are you hosting the game, dedicated and with cable or dsl? THis seems to be a lag issue related to bandwidth.

Caulk can be applied to any surface. Since this map is in side; Portaling and VCLOG will increase performance if you are using a-lot of entities.
