there is a video tutorial in the cod 1 section you can download that talks about portaling. there are also info available in the docs folder that is in the activision/callofduty2 folder. I would download the video in the cod 1 section though. it might help. also do a search on this site about portals. i do know that there is other tutorials available on here that a search would probably turn up. One other thing you could do is load the maps that came with the editor and study how they used portals.

Trial and error turned out the best way for me to learn to portal, because I didn't fully understand it or whatever, you just need to start making them to get the hang of it, even though I did ask a lot of questions here, lol. But you need to look at the tutorials before you get to that stage.

portal all the buildings to start. then test compile for leaks.

portaling outside is much harder. I use a grid pattern of equal size portal rectangles starting from the center of the map and working outward making sure to miss all major structures. Each portal side will start from a caulk brush under the map and go up to the bottom of the skybox. I test compile after each portal area is made.

I have been told that this not the best way to do it, but it is the only way I can get outside portals to work

hehe fireball1, im kinda doing the same. I think the best way to portal is from building to building so to do this you have to make your portals off the grid lines, on angle. This is what I have not yet done. I make 4 way portals though no probs.
My portals work great but if I learn to make them off the grid it would be better. Im gonna study matmata some more to try do this.

hmm maybe my last post was not strictly correct. Saying 'learn to make them off the grid' is maybe slightly misleading because I guess if you did try to make portals without snap to grid and on angles you would probally always get like a TINY leak i think.

I always have snap to grid checked. I tried to make different shaped portal areas that followed the terrain and used the "E" command to ensure good fit ups but always got leaks or overlapping portals.

there has got to be a way!

yes! I finally got mine to work on angles, at first it wouldn't work because (i think) I was using the V key to move verts which seems to cause dupelicate plians for me, but when I got rid of the bad brushes and made new ones with the clipper tool it was ok. It all seems so confusing and stuff till you get it right just keep trying [thumbs_up]

If you have the same problem as with with dupe plains get rid of them make a brush the size you need or bigger, then cut it to shape with clipper then texture. Remember, only the portal face(s) are important they are what make your cells (+ structural brushes ofc) portal no draw is just a block you put your portal texture on.
