Could be caused by a number of thing .. Though to fix you are looking at a lot of work.

Most simple way to revert to a back up, otherwise it is just bug hunting..

This is a tough error to find, save your map as a diff. name, mymap1, mymap2 and so on.Now for the bug it means that either a brush , or a cyclynder, or even a patch is bad.if it was a clylinder it got flattened or twisted to much, same for patch.
If it was a brush the vertices got screwed up. SO AFTER you have saved you map as a diff. name start deleting brushes, start with your last was working on, save map compile and see if you found it.After you find the bad brush you can save your work with the other map file u saved, just delete the bad brush you found earlier.
