You can use the following conversion tool:

http://eliteforce2.filefront.com/file/DDS_Converter;29412

Alternatively the Microsoft DirectX SDK also has a conversion program in it. You can get it from Microsoft as part of the SDK or just the file you need from:

You convert the image file you created in windows paint.

Also if you use Windows Paint, you need to ensure that you save the image you made with a size that is compatible with DDS. DDS image files can only be created from images that have a width and length that is a number out of the following (called power of 2):

2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,1024

So valid images sizes are for example 128x512.

You set the size of images in windows paint with ctrl-e, ensure that the units are set to pixels.

Then save the image and use the conversion tool to create a dds file.

For the rest, follow the materials tutorials you mentioned you could not follow since you did not have Photoshop.

Btw, the nvidia plugin also works for photoshop elements which is more affordable and you frequently get it when you buy a camera or a tablet.

Photoshop Elements is a huge step up from MS Paint and not that bad compared to CS2. Keep your eyes out if you can get a copy from someone that buys a tablet and already has Photoshop CS2.

I personally bought Elements first and now a few months later I am at Photoshop CS2 since I enjoyed the graphics work so much =)

GIMP.

I use CS2...and Elements is a great cheaper alternative, but search for GIMP which is open source and a surprisingly powerful option that is often overlooked. And the price is right...
