Author Topic: Compile taking 12 hours -- so far.

I have been running a compile that has now taked twelve hours and is still running. Here is the compile log after the first twelve hours. I will let it run until I hear there is a problem or it finishes.

I think this is in the wrong section, but I've had this problem before when compiling my final version... If your just testing your map, check only these options:

Compile-
Compile BSP
Compile Lighting
Connect Paths

Lighting options-
Fast
Verbose


When you are compiling your final version, try these...

Compile-
Compile BSP
Compile -VIS
Compile Lighting
Connect Paths

Lighting options-
Extra
Verbose
ModelShadow

That is what I have checked on my compiler.

I have also checked my skybox about a million times for leaks. IS there any way of locking the skybox in place? Every so often I grab one of the sides of the box when I am manipulating another brush.

Sorry bro.. I don't know what to tell you... I don't know of any way to lock it...

May I suggest a few things that you may already know?
1)make sure that all the sides of the brushed that you can't see are "caulk"ed rather than textured (this includes the outside of your skybox). This will make it easier to spot holes.

2) Make your skybox as small as possible without having anything touching it.

3) Start your compiler before you go to bed and close all other programs and processess..

Thanks. I will try all of the above. My skybox is a bit on the massive side at the moment.

Might the models I placed have any effect. I assume there would be a specific error message if they did.

Today i compiled version 1.0 of my map "mp_africorps". It took me only about 1 1/2 - 2 hours, not more. I had

-Compile BSP
-Compile -Vis
-Compile Lighting
-Connect Paths

-verbose
-ModelShadow

checked. I don't know what "extra" does (besides making the compile time 9 times longer), but it doesn't improve the shadow quality or something else in game. At least i do not recognize anything.

Also if you have made any objects in your map "detail" this can occur. Once i made all my smaller objects "detail" and compiling time increased drastically (i cancelled it after a while.) I took the backup of my map - the one without all those objects marked as "detail" and - tadaa - compiling time was normal again, about 1 1/2 hours for a medium sized map.

I shrank the skybox way down and the map compiled in just about wo minutes. I may have inadvertently fixed a few other errors along the way.

Of course, now the lighting is all funky again, so we'll deal with that, and all of the vehicles look like dunebuggys with MG-42's mounted on them. I think I have seen posts on both of those problems.

Once again, the map didn't finish compiling in about seven hours. I thought I had simplified it, but apparently not. When it does compile, it usually compiled in 3-5 minutes (this is still a simple map), so obviously, there is some huge orror somewhere.

Here is the compile log after seven hours. I don't see anything obviously wrong, but I'm still quite a noob.

Do you have any custom maps or mods? If you do, remove them all. That worked with me when I had a problem like this
