Hey, gang. So far I've been very impressed with the amount of community spirit here (very helpful crowd). GGs on a great site!

Anyway, wanted to ask some advice. I've been slowly going through some tutorials, and individually trying different things (hills, buildings, etc.). So I'm drawing out a map on some graph paper for when I'm ready (or comfortable) to start mapping for real. It consists of 2 small towns seperated by a small group of hedgerows. All of this is on a gentle slope.

Now, I've gone through quite a few of Wyatt's tutorials for COD1 including the 4 mapping 101 tutorials. In there he suggests mapping out the prefabs and buildings before moving onto the details. And from what he was doing, I gathered this meant the ground as well.

So here's my question for you all: how would you go about mapping from start to finish if your map was semi-large (consider both towns to be very small maps, so x3 I figure it to be medium-large) and the whole thing was on a very gentle slope (I want the last 1 story building's ground floor to be roughly the same level as the first 1 story building's roof)? If I follow Wyatt's tutorial, then I'd map out both towns and perhaps the hedgerows before mapping the ground itself and the slope that these buildings are on. Is that the best way? What would you do?

It's an interesting question (and an intresting idea that you have).

I haven't been mapping for CoD2 for long, in fact I am just starting out but I have done mapping for other games such as DoD and UT2K4.

My personal choice would be to set up the lower town (with it's prefabs) and then try to put the slope in (just for the height reference). I would then put the second town in (the higher of the two).

At this point you would have some points of reference and you could check that the heights were all correct.

Once I was happy with all the heights I would finalise the terrain.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Good luck with the map.

here's how i mostly start a map

first thing to do is draw out your map and think how you want it to look how you want the layout think of possible ambush areas sniperspots and stuff

then just start mapping and make very simple prefabs just some squares to mark the places and sizes of the buildings and in your case hedgerows

get most of the terrain done

work out the prefabs in detail
but the last 2 steps mostly get mixed up by me because i can't focuse on 1 thing for days

Keep portals in mind while designing your map layout. [wink]

I read a tutorial about vis, but have yet to understand portals. I will definately be checking out as much as possible before I even begin my first real map. Gonna actually look at the portals vid tutorial now... so no point in asking if it's related in any way since I'll soon find out.

Thanks for the advice, gang. Would love to hear some more points of view. I like the idea of creating my first town and then the terrain as a reference to the second town. Any other suggestions?
