you use the patch height editor

search the forums for terrain height

it doesn't get clearer than the tutorial

LOL That's funny.

Yea, that tutorial kicks butt. I've been learning this just the last two days and that definately put me in the right direction.

Q: let's say you're making a map that is almost entirely sloped. Not a big drop, just a small slope from one end to the other. Also, I want a road that's going to start at the top of that slope and make its way to the bottom. What's the best way to go about this? I mean, settings, etc. Like, for instance, I start with grid 512 and zoom out in 2d then make a 2x2 square using the heavy blue lines in the grid. After tweaking w/ grid 1 to make sure the edges are correct, setting the terrain and patch w/10x10, I then copy and paste that square to make a 5x5 collection of those squares (thus making a 10x10 grid). With the Y menu open, I set the inner radius to 64 and the outer radius to 1024 (since I'm looking for a large amount of terrain to be moved).

That sound about right? Any experienced mappers have some advice on making this work better, easier?

you can allways rotate the assembly of patches around the x or y axis to make the initial slop, then use the patch editor to put some bumps in it. that should shortten the work a little bit. also learn to use the "flatten" and "grab value" options. (self explanatory... experiment with it and you'll see). that's how I personally do my hills. use "flatten" at an height I specified bottom right corner to bring a part of the patch to the highest point of the hill, then I use "smooth" to smooth the whole slope to make look natural. to me, that's a lot more rapid and precise to do this than any "paint height" manipulation. you prolly want to do the road before the terrain too... or at least a patch on its own because it'll have different texture.

this is what i would do in his situation

i would make my road out of patch meshes...windy, sloped, etc

then create terrain meshes independant of the road and use the height editor to raise the terrain around the road to suit
