Open up your map. Hit the N key to bring up the entity editor. Highlight Worldspawn. Put these in:
Key: ambient
Value: 300 (This can be set lower or higher. Even numbers.
Hit the enter key to set it.

The next one is.
Key: _color (Don't forget the underscore)
Value: 1 1 1 (This can be different colors. There is a space between the 1's.)

I use this for all builds. When I start adding lights I generally set the 300 ambient light much lower.
You can build a small test map to play with these settings.

[confused]
You really use ambient light in your maps?
But only for developing right?

sure why not. You can set it as dark as you want or as light as you want. Usually I will set the ambient at 300 for building purposes. Later in the construction after I verify all the textures are lined up perfect in game then the ambient light starts to come down and lights start to go in.
OR you can have 9 jillion little lights all over the place dragging the compile time down with fulvis.
Everyone is different my man. Each to his own. Try different things cause what someone else does may not make it right. I probably got the worst map building techniques in the world. [biggrin]
