Hey guys,

It amazes me how many times this question gets asked on here:
"Is there anyway of converting the bsp files into a map file."

The short answer is always: "NO."

I understand that some people just want to convert a previous version of a map to one that can be used by say, COD 2.
I even asked the question, only because I had found one that converted the RTWC files into map files and wondered if someone had come up with a way to do it. Which by the way, when I loaded the map file up in COD UO Radiant with the idea of making the RTWC Dam map for my own private consumption here at home, it came out REALLY messed up! So the answer was the same, which was: NO.

Still, I know why you see it asked, you can download maps that are for COD 2 now that are from MOH, but that was someone taking a LOT of time to make a COD 2 version of it.

Is there anyway you guys can post a headline somewhere that simply says:
"You can not convert any bsp files into a map file." [lol]?

Then again, I'm always saying no question is dumb [duh]

Very nicely said, i have seen multiple topics about over the last few days. I think it would be wise to make this sticky at least for a while.

Just to add that the same goes to 'porting' a map to CoD2, any map you see which is the same as earlier versions of the game are 'recreated'. This mean the DID NOT get the .map. And no you can't get hold of any other source files other than what came with the editor.

yes, some of them LOOK that good, that you'd think it was ported, but no, someone took a LOT of time to remake the map.
This should encourage people, give it a try! And Thanks Rasta.

going from bsp to map would be considered reverse engineering. it is the equivalent of cracking up an .exe (kindda). the compiling (map to bsp, .c to .exe, etc) main purpose is to protect the creator's work from plagiarism (among other stuff). so to me even considering to go from bsp to map is a real bad...... and it cannot be done (unless you're some kind of assembly code god).

so yes people, please forget about it.

Ok, so I had to scrap Win XP from my machine, and lost my original map files, there is no way to edit the iwd files (which is all I have left) in the event that someone finds a glitch in the released version?
Oh boy, Murphy's Law got me AGAIN!

There is only one answer to having your original .map files destroyed......backup.....backup.....backup!

In truth, right now if a virus or something attacked my hard drive to where I had to wipe it, I'd loose all my map files. There is no reason for me not to back them up, I've got pleanty of blank CD's and a CD burner, just laziness is all. And if something happens, I'll pay for that laziness! [tongue]

For some games like half life2 and dod source there is a tool for bsp to map (vmf). So it isnt impossible.
