It certainly seems that AMD buying out ATI-Technologies is likely.

Whether or not this will happen hasn't been confirmed, but according to RBC Capital Markets, it would be an improvement to the overall graphics industry. This just happens after Intel are putting in lots of money on the launch of their new CPU.

I guess nVidia will be pretty unhappy if this were to go through aswell.

Frobes reports:

"The synergies of this seem consistent with the recent announcements by AMD to significantly increase capacity over the next few-years," wrote analyst Apjit Walia in a note to investors Wednesday. "We believe ATI is a rare-buy in the semiconductor space right now given the near-term tie-up dynamics."

What do you think?

AMD has been really succesful over the years competiing against what (once) would have seemed an overwhelming competitor (Intel). AMD did this by offering a lower-priced similar product, and in recent years an arguably superior product (not to take this thread down an Intel v AMD direction).

Point being....add AMD "chutzpah", cash, marketing, research and technology to ATI and it would bode well for consumers.

As for Nvidia being unhappy, this should also be a good situation for consumers (you and me). They can make shareholders happy too....by making a product that is better and/or equal-but-cheaper than AMD/ATI...all good for us. Doesn't make it any easier for Nvidia, but that's what an open market is all about.

Seems like it would be good news for us over time....
