I believe i have seen some different terrain making programs before. They are normally pretty small, i think they just make a prefab or something like that>>>I could be wrong though [biggrin]

Narc
I am having trouble with the tutorial as well - I used your image from the tutorial and created my alphamap and all - but when I create the terrain with gensurf inside radiant all I get is a flat terrain - everything else works fine - just flat. Any ideas? I saved your tut_heightmap.bmp image - it is an 8bit bitmap so I dont see what the problem is....arrrrgggg.

you have to have a brush selected, run the plugin, do all of the options as shown in the tut but what i think the problem is -- pick your heightmap,in the filebrowser its in a different place than mine, the heightmap is what makes the plugin work. after that all you do is click OK it will change the brush from completely flat to a little bit bumpy and after that you can go to the next step in the tut

(bitmap tab)
filename: C:tut_heightmap.bmp (select your file with the browse button)
map color 0 to: 0
map color 255 to: 255

Still no good Narc - I did have the poly selected when I ran the gensurf plugin - the 8192x8192x1024 one you said to create in the tutorial - I did all the settings and the bmp from your tut and still I get a flat terrain. - The func_group is there - the terrain entity is in it and all its just....flat.

I tried it in gensurf - the standalone version and I get the same thing.

I tried it in Nems Terrain Generator and I got it create a terrain although I didnt have the program setup right.

Could it be gensurf or the version of gensurf - I am using what gensurf came with the sdk 1.02 version - dont think there is a newer one on the gensurf site.

Any ideas???

Oh I also tried the heightmap in several different folders - c:, base, heightmaps, textures... no go - flat as a board.

make sure your setting is for quake3? it should turn the brush into many triangles, even if it is flat triangles that shows it sort of worked if it wont transform from a single solid brush then this is very odd -- the plugin that comes in the sdk is the newest and works fine

Sorry if I didnt mention that - it is made up of different triangles - not 1 brush - its just flat. So in that respect it is working but Im not getting a "terrain" as the bitmap is laid out.

Narc helped me out with this one because I didn't get the tut either. This is how it goes.
1. Create a 512x512 greyscale bitmap and put it ANYWEHRE IT DOESNT MATTER
..................BLACK is LOW, WHITE is HIGH, GREY is MEDIUM HEIGHT! (the numerical value of your shade of grey is actually converted into units)
2. Open radiant and create a brush wich dimensions (x,y) as a multiple of 512.
3. The height of the brush is irrelevant
4 Select this brush and open gensurf. Apply all of the settings in the tutorial. The bitmap should be targeted to c:WHERE_EVER_I_PUT_ITTHEnAME.bmp (where ever you saved yours)
5. Press OK and it WILL create the terrain
6. If you don't like the way it looks, either modify your heightmap or fiddle with the gensurf settings

SETTINGS:

Divions (x,y): (extents tab) Having a low number will make your terrain smoother and less detailed. Having a high amount of divisions makes it a bit rougher. This tells it how many triangles to make in each row

Map color 255 to (bitmap tab) USE THIS TO SET HOW HIGH YOU WANT YOUR TERRAIN. If you want the highest point of your terrain at 1024 units, put 1024 IN THIS BOX! It will multiply the color value of each color on the heightmap to fit your new height proportionately. So if you did put 1024, and you had a grey of 100, it would end up 400 high in the game.

''Steep Angle'' (texture tab) This tells it how steep you want the steepest slope to be. So if you put black next to white, this would tell it what slope to make the transition.

Obvoiusly, set the textures as you wish.

IF YOU WANT AN ALPHAMAP (TEXTURING)

i gotta go now ill post this tonight
