It might be helpful to know what you have right now to decide what is a better upgrade. But not knowing what you have, I'd reccomend:

Ram first, but make sure its fast. Maybe pc3200, 400mhz fsb.

Now you can use that ram with rour old processor, assuming its not ancient. However, you can save up for a decent processor. For instance, I bought an Athlon64 3500+, 400mhz fsb, 1MB L2 Cache. All for 250$.

However, whatever you goto buy, make sure its compatable or your gonna buy the stuff needed fairly soon, for warranty reasons.

Increase your RAM, Windows requires memory from the moment you boot up so the majority of 512 will be already used therefore leaving very little for anything else.. I had a block of 512 and a 256 a while back but recently upgraded to two sticks of 1gb.. games run much smoother along with other 'memory hungry' applications such as level editing, and image software!

Well i got my memory for £30 for a 1GB stick. If i was you i'de first try upgrading your RAM as the processor is classed as a 'major upgrade' and require a little more skill to set up! not only that but if your computer doesn't have the memory then it doesnt need the power to process it!

1. Too much punctuation.
2. No need for three smileys where one works just as well.

Furthermore:

www.pricewatch.com

When I get the money, I'm going to augment my machine with +2GB of memory, for an unholy total of 3GB.

Well, definatly go for the ram first. Athalon XP and up all use the same kind of ram, DDR. PC3200 would be a good choice seeing your situation. However, I forget who, is commin out with DDR2 but don't worry about that. If your going from Athalon XP to 64 then your gonna need a new motherboard and MAYBE videocard if you use AGP right now. Your best bet if you want the 64 is to buy a combo or a "barebones" system, mobo + cpu in 1 package. For instance I had to upgrage quite a bit to get my athalon64:

Old:
Nforce2 Mobo
Athalon XP 2600+
1GB PC3200
GeForceFX 5900 AGP

New:
Snazzy new Mobo
Athalon64 3500+
1GB PC3200
Geforce 6800GT PCI-E
