Sometimes if the shape of a piece that requires a 3-point clip doesnt need to be too exact I'll rotate it, clip, than rotate back. But SHHH, don't tell anyone.

Well that makes me feel better, I was afraid I was the only one that had trouble doing a 3 point clip.
One trick I found usefull to get a complex cut is to do a normal clip then adjust the vertices on one edge to get the third angle, works ok most of the time.. [thumbs_up]

one trick/tip with the 3point clip is to cycle throught the views as you are making your clip to get the cut to go wehre you want it

I never use the CSG, did so way back in early Mohaa days and lost a map several times. It's not worth the risk. I seldom use the clipper tool to do anything more than create angles for roof lines most often for shaping clip brushwork around foliage and such. Just be sure you stick to working on the grid. Selecting the brushwork and hitting Ctrl+G will get you on the right track. It is generally best to never use the grid setting of '1'. There are a lot of basics that could be discussed in relation to this issue. Best advice is if you are asking for advice, take it....especially when the majority of it tells you the same thing. Be smart now, not sad later.

I do not use the CSG tool - However, as I understand it...

CSG can be used safely as long as the cutting brush is of a standard size that would fit the grid - 128x128 or 64x32 etc or at least a whole number size

Also the brush you are cutting into should be aligned with the grid or at least in a position where you can cut into it so that the brushes that are produced are of a whole number size

If you do not take note of this - you will produce brushes that are 32.1203 width etc which can cause problems with texturing and the vis process-especially if there are an infinite number of decimals

You can also end up creating brushes that are smaller than a 1 pixel cube - which will also interfere with the vis process

To use the CSG you will usually take such a time to prepare the cut - that it is much better and quicker to use the clipper tool , stick to the grid lines, and create standard size brushes where possible

hmmm

a while ago, i explained a small experiment to show the evils of csg, and i cant find it...so here you go again

draw out a cube 128^3

next draw out a cube 64^3

free-rotate the smaller cube on 2 of the axis to basically tip it onto a point (creating a diamond shape)

place the rotated cube in the exact same origin as the larger cube (it should be inside of the larger cube)

press (*shudder*) csg subtract

now...free rotate what is left as a whole..or try to

this isn't something you would normally do in a map (create a small hollow space) but it does show you what looks like to have been a simple group of cuts has gone severly awry - becoming apparant when you try and rotate it

The 'Hollow' tool is perfect for making your skybox or rough-outs for houses etc. Far faster than any other method. Regardless of how careful you are with CSG, it will eat you alive eventually.
