Buzzscope has an article by David Rodriquez that discusses the over abundance of cutscenes in games. He is disgusted that the time spent playing a game is nothing more than a means to get from one cutscene to another.

...We’re supposed to bemaking games, and instead we are making ridiculous, half-assed movies.

Movies are linear, passive entertainment. You sit there and watch thestory the creators have laid out for you. You have no control over theoutcome. ... but why in the name of all that is holy would youwant your VIDEO GAME to do that, too?

After reading the entire article, I can agree with some of his points. I have been in more than a couple of cutscenes that I just wanted to skip in order to get back to the game. However, what kind of games does that leave us with? The Sims?

is it possible to create a game that doesn't have a story line. Rather, it's a 'day in the life' and the day is being written while the game is being played.

The design objective would be to leave things around (objects, scripts, etc) that can be played out if so desired. It would be a virtual life played out in real time. The difference is that this virtual life is more interesting in some way than your own.

Does it make any sense to make or play such a game?

rofl - for the record foxhound - it was foyleman that said it this time

[angryalien]

i think you are on the track that the gaming industry is trying to hop on though foyle. the broader the range of the game...or the less scripted it seems (more player options on the outcome) the more desirable said game becomes

the trite ones are the ones which are described in the article, where you play from cutscene to cutscene....simply because they had an idea of hat the gameplay should be like...but no sory to make it playable....
