Is the vid card pci, agp, pci express? How much memory on the card? Even with a gig of memory you still have lots of processes eating at RAM. Has your HD been defragged lately?
Do you have tons of Temporary Internet files, Temps files etc.
Any number of things could slow down you computer enough to not allow you to run BF2 on it's highest settings.
You did not mention about the cooling capabilities of your pc housing. Heat can also slow down the processing power of your pc and vid card.

Most games I run with the default and only change them if necessary.

maxed out? it will probably run it, but not at a high frame rate.
As Red was asking, it depends on the video card stats.
An AGP 5900 with 256Mb Ram works, but not well on high settings. An sli 6800 with 256Mb ram will run it quite well. An sli 7800 does it justice.

yes that vid card will definatly run it quite well. And since the 6800GS with 256mb is only in the PCI-E form, plus the 256mb gddr3 memory itself, high enough core clock, and quite good mem clock, it should give pretty good fps on all high.
