Do we have any Maya Experts here at Modsonline.com? I am in the process of trying to learn Maya and have a very basic knowledge of Maya. This is an amazing program. I just purchased a book, Game Character Development with Maya, which is one of several I have.
I would be willing to share what little knowledge I have with any members. From what I have seen in the last few months there are many possibilites using Maya for level design.

!!!! I can do graphics. I can make movies. I can composite. I can map. I can NOT model in 3D. Maya has been the bane of my existence. I have the personal learning edition, and getting a little community started here at MO to learn Maya would be phenominal! Post what little knowledge you have, for I hunger!

I know there are a ton of maya forums out there across the world but most of them are dedicated to projects other than modelling for games like we support here. How many times have you worked on a level and wished for something different than stock models in your map. What I mean for instance is say a simple chair. You make a level and wind up using the same damn chair all over the map, or lights or lamps or even dead or living animals.
If the interest is there we can all learn from each other.
I generally fire up Maya almost every evening for a bit and try to do some work.

This is a good idea but not all can afford Maya, doesn't the personal edtion you have leave a watermark?

I too, am struggling to learn 3D as I find making things a bit more fun than mapping.

Milkshape seems to be basic then goes up to 3DS Max then Maya...be nice to learn one of those proggies with efficiency [thumbs_up]

That would be great Janova.
I am stuck on texturing and rendering right now. Most of the books I have do not go into texturing and rendering very good.

What really is bugging me is those chrome steel balls I see made with Maya. I been looking for info on that all week. I am sure it is probably all shaders and rendering.
I have probably spen 300 bucks on books already and one more on order for Rendering/Texturing. Most of the pics I have seen were I believe Rendered in Mental Ray. Here are some of the things covered in this book:

Create materials and textures
Set up lights and cameras
Work with shadows and raytracing
Learn to control your renders
Understand rendering for special effects and compositing
Explore hardware rendering and vector rendering
Create Caustics and Global Illumination effects
Understand Final Gather and HDRI techniques
Create Maya and mental ray Shaders
And much more!

well the biggest question i have to ask you is probably 'are u modeling for gaming perposes?'

If you are then you dont need to be able to render full stop... nor lighting... the only things u need to be able to do is creat the object using "polygon primitives", UV map it, and then create the skin in photoshop.

I could make a detail tut for MO for setting up Maya for game modelling perposes... i think it'll help every out a bunch.

The tutorial on how to set up Maya for games would be very interesting. That way the scale of the models should be very close.

Once I was using 3dsmax for UT2k3. Worked on a level for some time building models for my level but could never figure out how to optimize the level since the FPS was in the toilet and it kept getting worse. So I dropped it.

One of the books has an indepth tute on creating a polygon female for games. I got started on the model and put it aside because I wanted to try and learn some about the texturing and rendering scenes.

But the main focus is on low polygon modeling for games. One idea I had was to try and make some some destroyed buildings, walls etc and try to import into sof2 or cod. That would be cool. Then make these model prefabs available for download and importation into the game.
I have seen so many great pieces of art created with Maya but they are just scenes rendered out.
