I sure could use some help on unconvering what the problem is.. I followed Foyleman's tutorial for map making in Q4 (btw, -awesome-! work. I found it extremely helpful!) But the problem is, I got to the end while following along, and it said I had a leak, I tried running the pointfile thing from the file menu and I get nothing, I go into explorer and search around and find it never even created the pointfile for some reason [banghead] [banghead] [banghead]. I guess maybe because it's just 1 room? I dunno.. I'm so disgusted that I just don't even care about the pointfile, I just want simplest thing to at least work..Anyhow I decided to take it slow, I created a totally new map after completely exiting out of Q4 and the editor, and I just created a simple brush with the caulking texture, extruded it on all axis and "hollow"ed it. Placed a Info_Player_Spawn (or whatever the actual name is for the entity) and a light in the "room", no textures still at this point, and I still get a leak error.. I dunno how much more basic I can go..[duh]

I even tried doing a search for updates within the game thinking I have a much newer version than most of majority that introduced a bug, or an older copy than the majority and maybe they released an even newer version, but nope. no dice..I would -really- appreciate any help

problem solved. ok that was really weird.. I had originally made my map directory structure look like C:\Program Files\id Software\Quake 4\q4base\maps the reason I did that was because when I did map it came back and said cannot load map /maps/ I figured the game folder ex:
C:\Program Files\id Software\Quake 4\q4base\maps\game was just something ID did for organization purposes.. Well apparently it'll work without the game, just the light stuff will fail every single solitary time.. Soon as I modified my directory structure it worked like a charm.. Odd that everything (saving/opening/applying textures/etc) would work just fine except the bsp's lighting step. Ah well.. lesson leared [ohwell]

Hopefully this'll be my last post to this thread, I hate inadvertingly bumping a completed thread, but I figured it's useful info so I should add this little bit I found out..

Apparently the built-in map editor has issues with hyphen's/dashes in the filename.. Following the advice of the video tutorial I had been keeping multiple revisions of my test maps like test1-2 test2-1 test2-2 test2-3 etc.. Problem is, once I fixed my "leak" issue (having been caused by directory structure layout) it kept throwing an exception with the error it can't find maps/map.bsp or some weird thing like that, I found that by keeping the dash mark (-) out of the name, the map then compiled flawlessly. So just something else for you all to tack down as stuff that may not be obvious that can possibly be the cause of problems if your fighting basic foundational stuff
